Poor quality images, GIF images.

The images on http://fsfe.org/en/fellows/raffle/2007/raffle_2007 don't look very good -- for me at least, there's dots all over them. They're GIF images, though that shouldn't be the cause of the problem, but shouldn't we really be using PNG? For these reasons: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html

Re: Poor quality images, GIF images.

Hello Matthew

the dots in the gif images are a result of a compromise with their size. Why gif? Because the images are animated. PNG doesn't support animation and even if there are other image formats that allow animations, they are not always supported by web browsers.

As for the GIF patent problem, read the footnote of the page you suggest:

1. We were able to search the patent databases of the USA, Canada, Japan, and the European Union. The Unisys patent expired on 20 June 2003 in the USA, in Europe it expired on 18 June 2004, in Japan the patent expired on 20 June 2004 and in Canada it expired on 7 July 2004. The U.S. IBM patent expired 11 August 2006, The Software Freedom Law Center says that after 1 October 2006, there will be no significant patent claims interfering with employment of the GIF format.

So for animated graphics we have the GIF format, but once gnash will start to be delivered in GNU/Linux distribution we will be able to use flash format to have good quality animations.

thanks

Re: Poor quality images, GIF images.

Ah, that explains it -- I have GIF animation turned off so I didn't realise they were animated!

Re: Poor quality images, GIF images.

It's sad that Mozilla dropped MNG support in their browsers. MNG, the animated version of PNG, would have been a good alternative to GIF. Konqueror is one of the few browsers supporting MNG natively.
