Last Saturday (22.9) a couple of Fellows, including myself joined the demonstration "Freiheit statt Angst" (Freedom instead of Fear) in Berlin, Germany. The demonstration's focus was protesting against "Anti-Terrorism" legislation that severly threatens our civil liberties in Germany and Europe. In the center of criticism was Head of the German Department of Interior Wolfgang Schäuble who wants to legalize and deploy State-controlled Trojan Horses to spy on "potential terrorists" (citizens) and control their computers. Soon also *all* E-Mail, Phone and VoIP traffic within Europe is supposed to be recorded and stored for 6-24months (Vorratsdatenspeicherung); Our ID-Cards (which you are obliged to carry with you) are going to contain (the Passports already do) RFId-Chips; public cameras are being equipped with Face- and License-Plate-Recognition Software. RFId-Sensors for the cameras are also being discussed....

With all these bad news, the demonstration was a real success. About 15.000 people took part in the protests, alltogether a very mixed crowd: all opposition parties (Liberals, Left and Greens), Antifacist-groups and the radical left, German trade unions, "traditional" Civil Rights Groups as well as the more geeky NGOs (like the Chaos Computer Club, STOP1984...), organized Doctors, Journalists and Homo-sexuals, the "Spiritual Telephone Support" of the German protestant church (!), aswell as worried ordinary citizens... AND of course, us, Free-Software activists!

During the second half of the demonstration Police provoked violence with the more radical groups; several people (not the police of course) were injured and several (others) arrested. Altogether the Police forces never adhered to the "deescalation plan" proviously agreed upon that included not video-taping the people except in extreme situations.

Here are some pictures taken by us:
