Office warming party, Berlin, Germany
12 December 2009
Since September KDE and FSFE have a joint office in Berlin. On December
12th we will celebrate that at Linienstr. 141, 10115 Berlin with a nice
year-end party starting at 6pm. If you plan to come please sent a note
before December 7th to Matthias so that there
is enough to drink. You can help us by bringing some Christmas cookies,
too.
Fellowship Meeting, Berlin, Germany
10 December 2009
The Fellowship Group Berlin will meet on December 10th at 19:30. As
usual, the location is the NewThinkingStore, Tucholskystraße 48.
Hugo Roy will give a presentation about "EIFv2: Tracking the loss of
interoperability." Other topics will be: brainstorming for DFD (Document
Freedom Day), 26C3: Here Be Dragons, Fellowship Election 2010, Cooking
for Freedom.
Guests are welcome to join in and chat about issues around Free
Software.

With the growing interest attached to Free Software law issues, the second edition of the EOLE will take place in Brussels, in the prestigious confines of the European Parliament. Among other specialists, Adriaan de Groot, FTF Coordinator, will hold a conference entitled "Use the Source -- but what is it?" The event is accessible on registration only.

FSFE President Karsten Gerloff will give a speech about “Welcome to the
mainstream: Free Software in Europe” on December 2nd. The Free Software
World Conference is jointly organised by the Spanish regional governments
of Extremadura and Andalusia. The event is public.

The European Commission's project on interoperability for
eGovernment services is organising and information day on
the European Interoperability Strategy. FSFE's President
Karsten Gerloff will participate in the discussions to
make sure that the voice of Free Software and Open
Standards is heard.
Fellowship meeting in Dusseldorf

The monthly Fellowship meeting in Dusseldorf will take place on

FSFE will be present with a booth at this years Brandenburger Linux Info Tag
(BLIT). The Fellowship Group Berlin will man a booth to inform visitors about
various aspects of Free Software. Also T-shirts and books about Free Software
will be sold. The event starts at 10 am and takes place at the
University Campus Griebnitzsee in Potsdam.
Admission is free as in free beer.

After some time of inactivity the edu-team went back to work. Therefore

join the discussion on the future of the education activities.
WIPO meeting on implementation of Development Agenda, Geneva, Switzerland
16 – 20 November 2009
Thanks the consistent support by FSFE and other
organisations, the WIPO Development Agenda is finally on
the way to implementation. FSFE's President Karsten
Gerloff will participate in the meeting of the Committee
on November 16th to 20th to make sure that Free Software and Open
Standards take their place in this process.
FSFE is a registered observer to WIPO. The event is not
open to the public.
13 – 15 November 2009
This year's FSCONS (Free Society
Conference and Nordic Summit) takes place on November 13-15 and is
co-organised by Fellows of FSFE. More than simply a conference,
FSCONS is a meeting place for social change, focussing on the
future of Free Software and how to build a Free Society on its
principles. Please visit the FSCONS Wiki if you have ideas
for the event or wish to get involved in any way.

FSFE is sponsoring the international meeting for GNU hackers and contributors, in which Karsten Gerloff, FSFE President, and Adriaan de Groot, FTF Coordinator, will participate. The event takes place at the IT University, Patricia Building, Vin Cerf Room, Forskningsgången 6, Gothenburg from Wednesday 11 to Friday 13 November 2009 and at FSCONS from Saturday 14 to Sunday 15. 07 – 08 November 2009
OpenRheinRuhr 2009 in Bottrop is the largest exhibition
concerning Free Software in Germany's Ruhr Area. Some of
our German Fellows help to organize this convention or
present Free Software projects they are working on. Hence
FSFE will not miss the opportunity to contribute to this event
with a booth. On November 7 and 8 we bring the idea of Free
Software and its related topics to the public again.
This time we intent to cross the border from IT into the Arts
by providing a discussion lounge to broach the issues of
"Software as a cultural technique" and "Coding as an art".
In addition to the booth a social event for Fellows will be
held on 2009-11-07.

Unlike proprietary software, the Free Software requirements are
not about remuneration, but about maintaining the Freedom of
users of the software to use, study, modify and distribute. That
places some interesting requirements on manufacturers of devices
that use this software.

at this years Embedded Linux Conference in Grenoble, France.

On October 10 Torsten Grote is invited to an event from the working
group on digital democracy from the Linkspartei. The working group
deals with policy of the information age. At the beginning of the event
Torsten Grote will give a speech about Free Software and afterwards
participate in the discussion. The event takes place in the
Kopenhagener Str. 9, 10437 Berlin from 10 am to 6 pm. Everybody
interested is invited. The attendance is free of charge.

The Library of Alexandria, Egypt, is holding a three-day
workshop to introduce judges, lawyers, and researchers
from Egypt and the Arab world to new tools for the
dissemination of knowledge. With representatives of Egypt's supreme court in attendance, FSFE's President Karsten
Gerloff will be leading two sessions in the workshop, one
on the history and basic concepts of Free Software, and
the other on Free Software licensing.
Software Freedom Day in Vienna, Austria

The Vienna Fellowship Group
invites you to celebrate the
Software Freedom Day
with us at Metalab. The four freedoms are
celebrated with free music (as in freedom) and gratis snacks (which unfortunately
are not free). We are looking forward to many visitors!
18 – 19 September 2009
From September 18-19 Matthias Kirschner will be in Leipzig to
participate at the Software Freedom Day. The celebration starts on
Friday at 6 pm in the sublab, Karl-Heine-Straße 93 04229 Leipzig. There
will be cake and everything else you need to celebrate Free Software.
On Saturday 2 pm Matthias will give a talk about Free Software and the
Software Freedom Day at the street festival. This speech will also take
place in the Karl-Heine-Straße 93. Afterwards there will be a small
FSFE booth, to answer questions around Free Software. Everybody is
invited to join.
Fellowship's stand at the Braderie de Lille, Lille (France)
05 – 06 September 2009
The so-called "Braderie de Lille" (Lille's flea market) is a big outside-event which has taken place every year since the 12th century during the first week-end of september. chtinux, a Linux User Group which is installed around there, has proposed to the Fellowship, as it did last year, to take part in the Braderie. The FSFE, and especially the Fellowship's stand, will get much visibility, since millions of people of numerous nations take a walk on Lille's streets. Come to discover this beautiful city and to eat some Braderie's culinary specialities like clams ! And above all, come in order to support the Fellowship !
Fellowship's stand will be situated on Place du Vieux Marché aux chevaux.

As part of the OpenRuhr initiative the "Uploadparty" takes place on
September 5. The goal of the monthly uploadparties is to enlarge free
culture in the Ruhr area. At this event everybody can bring his own
paper pictures from the area, scan them, and make them available under
the Creative Commons By license. Matthias
Kirschner is participating at the event which takes place at
6pm in the Unperfekthaus, Friedrich-Ebert-Str. 18, 45127 Essen.

The 10th RMLL, Rencontre Mondial de Logiciel Libre (LSM, Libre Software
Meeting) is taking place at Nantes. Rainer Kersten will organise a FSFE
booth there.
RMLL is the most important Free Software event at France. This year,
GNU/Linux User Group Nantes is expecting some 5000 visitors at the
University of Nantes.
Whoever would like to come and help, is highly welcome. Please contact

First Fellowship meeting in Graz, Austria

Fellowship Meeting in Berlin in June

the free OpenStreetMap
project, outlining its progress, motivating people to join.

As one of the biggest events of its kind in Eastern Europe, eLiberatica discusses and demonstrates the advantages of adopting, using and developing Free Software solutions.
Georg Greve, president of the FSFE, will talk about the challenges of the traditional standardisation system, the role of patenting and the mechanisms that allow us to cope with legal issues.

Stuttgart (campus Vaihingen) about "Professional Free Software in Economy
and Politics" as part of the lecture "Free/Libre and Open Source Software
Engineering". He will talk about Free Software in general, categories of
Free Software licenses, software patents, Open Standards and more. The

For the first time a Free Software event will take place in the region of Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. Georg Greve, president of the FSFE, will take that opportunity to talk about Free Software business basics, its strategies and implications.
The TILT 2009 aims at presenting specific solutions made in Portugal as well as inspiring young people to get involved.

Second European Licensing and Legal Workshop for Free Software
23 – 24 April 2009
The second European Licensing and Legal Workshop organised by the
Freedom Task Force of the FSFE will
be held at the Hotel Okura on the 23rd and the 24th of April 2009 in
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This conference will provide a forum for
discussions on supply chain management, compliance procedures, licence
management, community interaction, and other legal issues related to the
growth of the European Free Software market. More information in the

FSCONS Fellowship meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden

On 15 April, Fellows and other interested parties are invited to
attend an open planning meeting and get-together to discuss FSCONS

From 25. to 28. March the "Frühjahrsfestival zum Datenschutz" will take
place at the public library at Stuttgart, Germany. At Saturday 28. March
14:00 Björn Schießle will give a speech about "Free Software and
Privacy". The speech ought to deliver a general introduction to Free
Software and how it can help to improve privacy.

Wednesday 25 March is the global day for document liberation. The day will
be dedicated to promoting open document standards, with local events all
across the globe. Document Freedom
Day (DFD) is a grassroot movement promoting and raising
awareness for
Open Standards, and has over 220 teams across
the world.

Microsoft OOXML -- what happened those times
12 March 2009
On 12 March Torsten Werner and Michael Schinagl, who both participated
in the standardisation process of the proprietary Microsoft OOXML
standard, will talk about their experiences in this process. The Berlin
Fellowship group invites all people interested to participate. We start
at 19:30 in the Newthinkingstore, Tucholskystr. 48, Berlin. After that
we will discuss future activities for this year.

Fellowship Meeting in Berlin, Germany

The local Fellowship Group will meet on 12 February, 19:30 at
NewThinkingStore, Tucholskystraße 48. Jürgen Neumann from
Freifunk-Berlin and Fabienne Serriere will give a talk about "Open
Hardware" in English. Main questions are what Open Hardware is and why we
need it. Afterwards there will be room for questions and a discussion.
People interested in this topic and other guest are as always welcome to

FSFE attends FOSDEM, a European Free Software developer conference
organized by volunteers wich takes place from 7th - 8th of February
in Brussels (Belgium).
The event promotes the widespread use of Free Software, to provide
Free Software developers and communities a place to meet, to get in
touch with other projects, and to promote the development and the
benefits of Free Software solutions.
The FSFE will attend the event with a booth where visitors will be
informed about recent activities (especially of FTF),

Wednesday, 4 February, the next Fellowship meeting in the Rhein/Main
area will take place in Frankfurt: We are going to meet in the "Club
Voltaire", Kleine Hochstraße 5 (2 minutes from "Alte Oper"), 60313

Fellowship meeting and KDE 4.2 release party in Stuttgart, Germany

As a joint event between KDE and the FSFE Fellowship we will have a
Fellowship meeting and a KDE 4.2 release party at Friday 30th January in
Stuttgart. Together with KDE we will celebrate the release, meet, talk
and have fun. Of course we will have a presentation of KDE 4.2 and a
introduction of FSFE and the Fellowship. Everyone interested in Free
Software is invited.

KDE 4.2 release party in Zurich, Switzerland

There will be an event to mark the release of KDE 4.2 in Zurich, Switzerland, on Wednesday 28th January. The event will be held at the Auditorium Maximum at the ETH Zurich, and starts at 17:30.
The event is free to attend, and will feature an introduction by FSFE's President, Georg Greve, and a talk by Aaron Seigo of the KDE project. Food and drinks will be served afterwards. For more information please see the KDE 4.2 Release Party page on the KDE wiki.
KDE 4.2 Release Party, Berlin, Germany

The Berlin Fellowship group invites everybody to the KDE 4.2 release
party on January 28th. This is a good occasion to celebrate Free
Software on the Desktop. The party will be hosted by KDAB in its Berlin
Office starting 20:00 at Adalbertstr. 7/8 (U Kottbusser Tor). If you
want to join, please send an e-mail to the organisers, so it
can be planned accordingly. The Fellowship group Berlin is looking

Fellowship Meeting in Berlin, Germany

The local Fellowship Group will meet on 8 January at 19:30 to welcome the
New Year. The location is as always the NewThinkingStore at
Tucholskystraße 48. Mario Behling will talk about LXDE, the LXDE
community as well as the Free Software community in Asia, esp. Bejing,
Taiwan, Shenzhen and Singapur. Guests are welcome to join in and chat
about issues around Free Software.
