WEBVTT 00:00.000 --> 00:04.640 Before we start with the podcast, we would like to say thank you to all of you who support 00:04.640 --> 00:07.840 the FSFE's work of money. 00:07.840 --> 00:12.760 Working for software freedom and producing podcasts cost money. 00:12.760 --> 00:18.200 Please consider supporting us with our nation and the FSFE.org slash donate and in the 00:18.200 --> 00:33.880 show notes. 00:33.880 --> 00:36.480 Hello and welcome to the software freedom podcast. 00:36.480 --> 00:40.120 Thank you so much for listening to this podcast and this episode. 00:40.120 --> 00:44.280 Without you and your support, this podcast would not be possible. 00:44.280 --> 00:46.920 Thank you our dear listeners. 00:46.920 --> 00:51.720 This podcast is brought to you by the free software foundation Europe. 00:51.720 --> 00:55.600 We are a charity that empowers users to control technology. 00:55.600 --> 00:59.840 Today I'm here with my colleague Ana Galán. 00:59.840 --> 01:04.240 Hello Ana, nice to finally have you here on the software freedom podcast. 01:04.240 --> 01:05.240 Thank you very much. 01:05.240 --> 01:10.640 It's another to finally manage to be here with you. 01:10.640 --> 01:12.200 I think it's the first time, right? 01:12.200 --> 01:16.880 Yeah, it's my first time so, I know it never was, but I'm very, very happy. 01:16.880 --> 01:23.880 Really happy to make it into the cool people that are coming to this spot. 01:23.880 --> 01:33.440 Yes, since Alex is off right now, I'm getting on all my co-workers and all of them have 01:33.440 --> 01:36.160 never been here on the podcast and I like each episode. 01:36.160 --> 01:39.320 I'm like, oh, just the first time we're doing that together, right? 01:39.320 --> 01:41.920 But I have been doing that for quite a few times now. 01:41.920 --> 01:44.360 Why haven't you been here before? 01:44.360 --> 01:45.360 What went wrong, Ana? 01:45.920 --> 01:52.000 I guess, you know, when you do communications, there's always other colleagues who knows 01:52.000 --> 01:55.560 more about things than you do over the topics, right? 01:55.560 --> 01:59.760 At conferences, at least, you always know quite a lot about the booth. 01:59.760 --> 02:04.520 More than I can say sometimes about other activities that are not mine. 02:04.520 --> 02:08.720 So because you read all our news and you do all the communication and you're responsible 02:08.720 --> 02:14.040 for all the mastodon things and I'm proud to, no, I'm forget. 02:14.040 --> 02:19.760 But I will be doing a podcast about the Fediverse in the near future, so you will go into that 02:19.760 --> 02:20.760 topic. 02:20.760 --> 02:23.040 I can't wait. 02:23.040 --> 02:29.360 All right, but today we are not talking about social media. 02:29.360 --> 02:31.880 Even so, it's a very interesting topic. 02:31.880 --> 02:36.920 But we are talking about the FSFE turning 25. 02:36.920 --> 02:42.280 So that's quite a long time for the FSFE to be around. 02:42.280 --> 02:50.320 And you're responsible for the big party, so tell me more. 02:50.320 --> 02:57.640 So yeah, like you said, we are these years our 25th anniversary, which means that some 02:57.640 --> 03:04.640 of our interns are younger than us, never to be, I don't know if you thought about this, 03:04.640 --> 03:05.640 but yeah. 03:05.640 --> 03:09.800 Oh my goodness, I have never thought about that, and now I feel really old. 03:09.800 --> 03:20.960 So 25 years since we were founded here in Germany to empower people to use control, use 03:20.960 --> 03:29.440 and control technology in Europe and we want to celebrate with everyone who's been here 03:29.440 --> 03:38.240 in the last 25 years or from the some founders to all the new people and all the new donor 03:38.240 --> 03:46.640 supporters, staff, everyone, and we're going to have a great huge party in Krakow in 03:46.640 --> 03:47.640 Poland. 03:47.640 --> 03:50.720 Are you very much looking forward to that? 03:50.720 --> 03:55.600 Yeah, I mean, this is going to be great with a lot of surprises. 03:55.600 --> 04:04.240 For this, we decided to we talk with your Python, that will be also those that week in 04:04.240 --> 04:11.240 Krakow, and then we'll part of of your Python during the weekend, and we will have there 04:11.240 --> 04:17.280 like a conference with different talks from yeah, a lot of people who are related to the 04:17.280 --> 04:26.800 FSFE, like for example, like friends, a part of the community, founders, former presidents, 04:27.800 --> 04:35.320 former staffers, current staffs, a lot of volunteers, and ice cream, there will be ice cream, 04:35.320 --> 04:46.080 which is very important, some surprises, and then we will have a huge party because we want 04:46.080 --> 04:53.400 to celebrate with everyone, and the best way to do it is with a party, and a cake, hopefully, 04:53.400 --> 04:56.760 let's see, we're working on that. 04:56.760 --> 05:01.960 Well, I hear that you have pretty good baker and scones. 05:01.960 --> 05:06.600 Yeah, in this case, I'm not the one making the cake. 05:06.600 --> 05:11.400 Luckily for me, there's a lot of things to do, right? 05:11.400 --> 05:15.040 But there was going to be a lot of other surprises. 05:15.040 --> 05:22.200 So I don't want to say a lot, because oh no, you have to tell me one. 05:22.200 --> 05:24.600 You have to tell me one surprise that will be happening. 05:24.600 --> 05:26.200 Oh, at least give me a hint. 05:26.200 --> 05:32.920 Well, on the first day, we would end the conference with a super nice, in-person theater, 05:32.920 --> 05:36.080 of course, about free software. 05:36.080 --> 05:40.040 So okay, now I feel like I need to prepare. 05:40.040 --> 05:46.520 No, I mean, there will be some theater people doing it, don't worry, but yeah, maybe we 05:46.520 --> 05:50.240 can also bring some people and say it's a great idea. 05:50.240 --> 05:54.160 I'm prepared just in case. 05:54.160 --> 06:01.920 Okay, maybe after the official theater, we can have an office, you know, the amateur one. 06:01.920 --> 06:03.680 I will do that. 06:03.680 --> 06:06.240 I will get, I will fight somebody else. 06:06.240 --> 06:10.360 So, yeah, so it's going to be really, really great. 06:10.360 --> 06:16.600 It's also like a moment for us to say thank you to everyone who's been here during the 06:16.600 --> 06:22.440 last 25 years, as I said, you know, everyone has been supporting us. 06:22.440 --> 06:27.560 Our great donors, that's like everybody who took a long, and we have donors also, almost 06:27.560 --> 06:34.880 from the beginning, that are still like donating to us, so that's something that's a great 06:34.880 --> 06:38.520 moment to say thank you and be grateful for this. 06:38.520 --> 06:44.120 All our great supporters who, you know, are also really, really there, and we don't see 06:44.120 --> 06:46.560 their faces a lot, right? 06:46.560 --> 06:49.360 So, it will be also, that's why we're doing this. 06:49.360 --> 06:56.640 It's a great moment for everyone to join, to also to ask questions, like, I know some 06:56.640 --> 07:01.840 people might be wondering, okay, how was the beginning of the FSFE, right? 07:01.840 --> 07:08.520 So, that's the place to ask that question, that's the place to meet the founders and tell 07:08.520 --> 07:13.000 them why they decided to fund the FSFE. 07:13.000 --> 07:20.000 So, there will be quite a lot of people, I guess, that will join us because, I mean, like 07:20.000 --> 07:26.880 25 years, there must have been a lot of volunteer supporters, staffers that you said will join 07:26.880 --> 07:33.040 us, former staffers, who are now volunteers sometimes, so that's quite a lot. 07:33.040 --> 07:38.440 Yeah, we are expecting quite a lot, but there's just a place for more. 07:38.440 --> 07:46.120 So, yeah, like, a lot of people coming are, as I said, a former, former president and 07:46.120 --> 07:55.680 founders, a lot of volunteers, a witness, people from our community, some from our associations, 07:55.680 --> 08:01.960 but a lot of current volunteers, but of course, we also want to see more. 08:01.960 --> 08:08.280 So, everybody can join, but then it's going to have, like, can you tell me the dates? 08:08.280 --> 08:15.400 Yeah, so as we said, it's going to be in Kraków in Poland, and it's going to be that we came 08:15.400 --> 08:25.160 from the 17th to the 19th of July, so yeah, everyone is invited, the entry to the conference 08:25.160 --> 08:31.400 is free, of course, the entry to the parties is free, so everything is free. 08:31.400 --> 08:40.200 And, yeah, doing, as we said, like, doing the Saturday, we have some talks, and as part 08:40.200 --> 08:44.440 of your Python, it's what the part of what the error Python calls prints, so it will 08:44.440 --> 08:51.040 be at their venue, and then do people need to register so that, and for EuroPython or 08:51.840 --> 08:56.240 it's free, they don't need to register, also your Python, like from Monday to Friday, 08:56.240 --> 09:02.400 there's the needs ticket, but for the weekend, they don't, don't, so we also will be part of 09:02.400 --> 09:08.480 your Python on Friday, we'll, I mean, we will have a booth, so if you are so there doing the week, 09:09.440 --> 09:18.800 our booth will be there with our amazing merchandise, and then on Friday, also Matthias, 09:18.800 --> 09:24.960 our actual president will be giving a talk, but our proper celebrations will start on Saturday, 09:24.960 --> 09:31.280 when he's free, and you don't need to register. Okay, so for Saturday and Sunday, it's free, 09:31.280 --> 09:36.320 and they can also join us there, and also see some amazing talks, I hear. Yeah, we are still 09:36.320 --> 09:44.560 preparing and drafting the agenda, but I can tell you that besides maybe talking about the past, 09:44.560 --> 09:49.360 we will talk, of course, about the present, the future, about our current activities, 09:50.240 --> 09:58.400 what we expect, right, to in the next year, so our vision, and of course, how everyone can 09:58.400 --> 10:04.720 contribute, and also your willing to help. As a volunteer, we will also be there. Yeah. 10:06.400 --> 10:11.280 Oh, that's very nice. I see you're trying to accommodate everybody there again. Of course, I mean, 10:12.240 --> 10:21.760 with all the wishes, meeting for everyone. Yeah, but it's also a year of it. It's a bit of your 10:21.760 --> 10:28.160 character to be, to make sure that everybody feels welcome and comfortable, and enjoying the time, 10:28.160 --> 10:34.160 and has a good time. That's really you. You're a really great hostess. Thank you, I guess. I mean, 10:34.240 --> 10:40.960 you know, is we want everyone to get the most out of it, and also to have fun, because that's 10:40.960 --> 10:49.360 also the point, right, to have fun when doing what you believe in, and you know, enjoying the community, 10:49.360 --> 10:57.280 we are part of, and yeah, so it's basically what it is, like having fun. Well learning, 10:57.920 --> 11:04.160 my learning more about free software and the episode. I really liked that, because I just, 11:04.160 --> 11:08.080 I have been back from a conference, you know, that like yesterday I arrived back home, 11:09.440 --> 11:16.640 and you will be going to the next conference in just a few days, and at this conference, I was like, 11:18.560 --> 11:22.960 I reminded about how much I do care about free software, and how much everybody else 11:22.960 --> 11:27.600 cares about free software, as well, and was really inspiring to see like all those people coming 11:27.600 --> 11:34.800 together and to feel this energy, and also those worries that are around like, how will the future 11:34.800 --> 11:40.000 of free software look like? What will be happening next? I still had the feeling that there is a 11:40.000 --> 11:45.680 community that there is this broader movement for everybody caring about software freedom, 11:45.680 --> 11:50.560 and that was really inspiring. So now I have the feeling that this is also the case with 11:51.520 --> 11:58.640 our summer meeting, and that it will be like really a poor free software, and why we care so much about 11:59.680 --> 12:06.400 the software freedom and the curiosity behind learning, you know what I mean, like so, very, very much looking forward. 12:07.040 --> 12:12.800 Yeah, no, indeed, that's interesting, because that's the conversation I've been coming in the last 12:12.960 --> 12:23.040 or so days, right? Like I'm one of my neighbors is using Linux since he was like 12 from 13, 12:23.040 --> 12:26.960 and yeah, I met him at another conference, and then we were talking all these things, and 12:28.880 --> 12:33.520 he was asking me, no, like this, why do you care about this? And I'm like, I think for the different 12:33.520 --> 12:40.400 reasons, don't do care. I mean, not at the beginning, right? That's also what I like about 12:40.400 --> 12:48.560 free software, like you don't need to be a developer, or you know, just like willing to 12:49.520 --> 12:55.280 take in the sense of understanding everything, you can also be like, we believe in software freedom, 12:55.280 --> 13:00.640 and in free software as a way to make the society a better place, you know, as a way to 13:02.080 --> 13:09.040 have more democracy, more transparency, so yeah, and then you talk without this super 13:10.000 --> 13:15.360 tech people, and then for them, of course it's about freedom, but you know, another different kind 13:15.360 --> 13:20.800 of freedom, but at the end of the day, we all have the same mission, right? We really want to 13:21.760 --> 13:28.160 make free software a reality that everyone else, so you can use, understand, and yeah, make their lives 13:28.160 --> 13:36.400 easier. That sounds really nice. I will take that as a closing. Thank you. 13:39.920 --> 13:46.160 All right, anything our listeners would need to know about the FSFE25, 13:46.160 --> 13:52.080 and basically our summer meeting this year, we have to date, we will be staying in Kraków, 13:52.880 --> 13:57.440 they can reach out to us, especially to you, your information is linked in the show notes, 13:59.120 --> 14:05.280 and there will be an amazing agenda with some impersonator, very much look forward to that, 14:05.360 --> 14:11.760 and even more surprises, anything else that we are missing to wrap every single one. 14:11.760 --> 14:19.200 No, just that feel free to come, join us, we really want to celebrate with all of you, 14:20.400 --> 14:25.360 even if you haven't been active in the last years, that's also not an excuse, join us. 14:25.840 --> 14:27.440 That's not an excuse. 14:30.640 --> 14:35.600 And he's Krakow, you know, he's an amazing city, I love Krakow, he has a dragon, 14:36.240 --> 14:42.240 so that's where the dragon is. He has a dragon, what? He has a dragon, the city, yeah, Krakow has a dragon. 14:42.720 --> 14:46.720 Okay, I'm very much looking forward to go there because I have never been there, 14:47.360 --> 14:53.120 so I never went to Krakow, so very much looking forward now. So basically is that, you know, 14:53.200 --> 14:58.720 nice city, nice conference, super nice people from Europe, Python, and of course, 14:59.280 --> 15:06.240 what can I say, we are so really nice, you are really nice, you will be there. So also our 15:06.880 --> 15:13.760 listeners can finally, you know, talk to you in person soon. That's also another good excuse. 15:13.760 --> 15:19.680 We should turn that I own, like not talk about me that much, but talking about you, I like that point a lot. 15:20.400 --> 15:21.200 Thank you. 15:21.200 --> 15:30.240 No, and yeah, and it's also a good moment to celebrate that we are still here, right? 15:30.240 --> 15:38.400 Wasn't the dream and the day of some, some people, they've our founders 25 years ago. 15:39.120 --> 15:45.120 Yeah, that they have 25 years ago, so they have these dream, they believe in this. 15:46.080 --> 15:50.400 And thanks to all our supporters, our donors, our volunteers, our, 15:50.960 --> 15:57.200 also our staff, yeah, our super nice colleagues that are really hardworking colleagues. 15:57.920 --> 16:05.760 Thanks to all of them, we are here 25 years later. And yeah, it might seem that 16:07.200 --> 16:14.240 the world was the same as it was 25, but we haven't maybe done a lot, but we have released in our 16:14.240 --> 16:21.760 timeline. And through our timeline, you can really really see that we've done a lot of 16:21.760 --> 16:27.120 great things. So even in these moments, when we are a bit more, you know, we have it under the 16:27.120 --> 16:34.640 weather and we are like, oh, the world is what's happening to the world. We can see that we achieve a 16:34.640 --> 16:43.200 lot. There's still a lot more to be done, but we are on the wood path. And yeah, hopefully we 16:43.200 --> 16:50.960 can celebrate 20, our 15 years, sorry, you know, 25 years. And then be the really, like the 16:50.960 --> 16:56.880 really, really, really old people. Exactly. And then the people will be coming to say hi to us 16:56.880 --> 17:05.200 to our founders. Okay, this is now a twist that I don't think we should go down that route too far. 17:06.960 --> 17:11.200 All right. Thank you, Ana. Thank you so much for joining me here. Thank you so much for 17:11.200 --> 17:18.000 walking me through the 25th anniversary. And now we really well prepared. Yeah. Thank you so 17:18.000 --> 17:23.360 much. Thank you.
