Fellowship Christmas get-together in Gothenburg, Sweden

It is time for a new tradition! A Christmas get-together for Fellows and others in Gothenburg, with technical help for all those interested in Free Culture and Free Software. FFKP (Union for Free Culture and Software) and FSFE (Free Software Foundation Europe) invite you to a get-together with glögg (spiced wine), coffee, cookies and cakes. There will also be a presentation of the FFKP and some of the avtivities planned for 2009. Jeremiah Foster will be there as well offering help for GNU/Linux and other Free Software to anyone who needs it.

On Saturday, 15th November at 14:00 h there will be a Fellowship meeting at the TIS Innovation Park of Bolzano. The meeting is open to Fellows and all persons interested in FSFE's work in Italy and the projects of the Fellowship. The meeting has two parts. First Patrick Ohnewein, coordinator of the Italian FSFE group, will talk about the activities of the FSFE and the Fellowship in Italy. In the second part the Fellows will be invited to make proposals for and discuss about future initiatives to promote and help Free Software.

NLUUG Autumn Conference and CELF Embedded Linux Conference Europe, Ede, Netherlands

The FSFE will be attending the NLUUG Autumn Conference on Thursday 6th November. This year's theme is 'mobility'. Feel free to come to our booth and ask about Free Software! Shane Coughlan, Freedom Task Force coordinator at FSFE, will also deliver talk entitled 'The strategic implementation of free software in business' at the CELF Embedded Linux Conference Europe 2008 at the same location on the following day, Friday 7th November. The successful implementation of Free Software requires an understanding of the best policy and processes applicable to its context. Shane will discuss how FSFE's legal project and its European Legal Network have engaged with this issue by producing generic market knowledge for supply and purchasing contracts, work flow documents and deployment methodology. The location for both conferences is Hotel en Congrescentrum De Reehorst, Ede, Netherlands.  

BLIT 2008, Potsdam, Germany

FSFE will be present with a booth at this years Brandenburger Linux Info Tag (BLIT). The Fellowship Group Berlin will man a booth to inform visitors about various aspects of Free Software. Also T-shirts and books about Free Software will be sold. The event starts at 10 am and takes place at the University Campus Griebnitzsee in Potsdam. Admission is free as in free beer.

For 2008, FSCONS is a collaboration of FSFE, Creative Commons, and Wikimedia Sweden. There will be three tracks (Free Culture, Free Software, Free Content), each lead by one of the main organisers. Topics will range from modern kernel design over citizen journalism all the way across to licensing in the 21st century.

Fellowship's stand at the Braderie de Lille, Lille (France)

The so-called "Braderie de Lille" (Lille's flea market) is a big outside-event which has taken place every year since the 12th century during the first week-end of september. chtinux, a Linux User Group which is installed around there, has proposed to the Fellowship to take part in the Braderie. The FSFE, and especially the Fellowship's stand, will get much visibility, since millions of people of numerous nations take a walk on Lille's streets. 'Licences that support freedom' speech at FKFT

Shane will talk about the types of licence that provide and protect freedoms of use, study, sharing and improvement in both technology and educational text. He will review the main challenges that platforms like SELF may encounter from the legal point of view and what kind of mechanisms help support reliable legal infrastructure. He will also discuss the work of FSFE's Freedom Task Force in providing education and support services relating to legal support for Free Software in Europe.

The work of the SELF Legal Experts Group (LEG) has helped to evolve a better understanding of Open Standards and provided a reference line for free educational materials. The coordinator of the SELF LEG, FSFE president Georg Greve, will provide an insight on how SELF has helped advance the state of the art, and how the work done in the SELF consortium will provide lasting benefit to the Free Software community.

Social event in Zürich - meet the FSFE!

This year's General Assembly of FSFE takes place in Zurich, and as usual, there will be a social event where the members of the General Assembly meet Fellows and other local Free Software supporters.
Around 18:20 the crowd will leave from the FSFE office at Sumatrastrasse 25 and walk through the old town in direction to Bellview.
At 19:00 we will catch a ferry from Zurich Burkiplatz.
At 19:47 the ferry will arrive in Erlenbach where -- due to the weather conditions -- we will continue the evening with a nice dinner at the Restaurant Malabar Garden in Kuesnacht where we expect to be until at least 23:00.

Speech "Free Software - Technique, Politics, Economy", Berlin, Germany

On Saturday 31th May 14-15 pm, Matthias Kirschner will give a speech at Linuxtag in Berlin. The talk is about the importance of the four freedoms to use, study, share and improve software and their influence in politics and economy. Target audience are beginners, or people who want to get some ideas how to explain this topic to beginners. The speech takes place at the BusinessForum (EG) and will be held in German.

The second eLiberatica takes place on 30 and 31 May 2008 in the World Trade Center Bucharest, Romania.
Following the huge public success the first edition of eLiberatica gained in 2007, the second edition will continue in the same tradition: to gather community and business leaders around the world to talk about the hottest Open and Free Technologies topics.
eLiberatica has its unique spirit and identity; you will learn and discover new things, meet international IT personalities, business people, high-tech professionals, you will make new friends, new partners, celebrate and truly enjoy a live event.
eLiberatica 2008 is intended to focus on:

  • Business adoption - how to make/save money and gain profit using Open and Free Technologies
  • Government, administration and public schools - the importance of Open and Free Technologies; Professional growth participating in the Free Software community
  • Break the code - tips and tricks, things you will not find in IT books.
 

LinuxTag 2008, Berlin, Germany

As in the last years FSFE will be present with a booth (hall 7.2b, booth 122) at LinuxTag 2008. It takes place at Berlin's Expo Center under the Funkturm. FSFE will inform visitors about various aspects of Free Software, like the Freedom Task Force, software patents, the SELF project, GPLv3, our work in the United Nations, or the Fellowship of FSFE. Also it is planned to sell T-shirts from FSFE and books about Free Software.

The twenty-second Austrian Fellowship meeting is integrated in the Linuxwochen event in Vienna. Fellows and other interested people can meet at the FSFE booth during the whole event to discuss, and at the end of the last day of the event, we will join the Linuxwochen After-Show-Party.

European Licensing and Legal Workshop

11 April 2008

FSFE's Freedom Task Force will host the first European Licensing and Legal Workshop for Free Software on Friday the 11th of April in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The venue for this meeting is the InterContinental Amstel Hotel. The event is targeted towards large projects and medium to large enterprises wishing to discuss their existing licence compliance processes. Parties attending are expected to contribute to issues ranging from process development through to optimising purchasing contract language for the benefit of the European Free Software community. This workshop has limited space available and therefore attendance is by invitation only. Projects and companies interested in attending this event should contact the FTF at contact@fsfe.org.  

Strategic implementation of Free Software

First Fellowship meeting in Augsburg

Friday, 29 March, the first Fellowship meeting in Augsburg will take place.
We are going to meet in the "Thing" bar, Vorderer Lech 45, 86150 Augsburg, right after the GNU/Linux infoday Augsburg. We expect to be there around 18:30.
Anybody who does not know Augsburg very well or is at the GNU/Linux infoday anyway can just come to the FSFE booth at the end of the event, we can then go to the meeting together.

Speech on Free Software licensing and the GPLv3 at OSiM USA

Shane Coughlan, FTF coordinator, will deliver a speech entitled 'Analysing Whether GPLv3 Has Improved Free Software Licensing' at OSiM USA on Tuesday the 12th of March in San Francisco. The speech will cover topics ranging from the creation of GPLv3 and its place in licensing through to examining the place of GPLv3 in tomorrow's market.

"Standards and the Future of the Internet" Conference, Geneva (Switzerland)

Shane Coughlan, the coordinator of FSFE's Freedom Task Force, will host a breakout session discussing licensing issues at the "Standards and the Future of the Internet" conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 26th of February. The conference will be held at the International Conference Centre and confirmed speakers include Vint Cerf, Carlo Piana, Thomas Vinje and Jeremy Allison.

FSFE attends FOSDEM, a European Free Software developer conference organized by volunteers wich takes place from 23rd - 24th of February in Brussels (Belgium).
The event promotes the widespread use of Free Software, to provide Free Software developers and communities a place to meet, to get in touch with other projects, and to promote the development and the benefits of Free Software solutions.
The FSFE will attend the event with a booth where visitors will be informed about recent activities, Free Software itself and the Fellowship of the FSFE. As usual, the FSFE's famous T-Shirts will be sold as well.

Richard Stallman Speech about Free Software Philosophy and History in Berlin, Germany

On Monday 18. February at 19:00 Richard M. Stallman, founder of the GNU project and the FSF, will give a speech at the mediacentre - Atrium, Johannisstrasse 20, in 10117 Berlin-Mitte. He will talk about the history and philosophy of Free Software. The Berlin Fellowship group will have a small booth there and inform visitors about the local groupd and FSFE's work in Germany and Europe. Admission starts at 18:30. The organisers suggest a donation of ~5 EUR to cover the costs.
