FSFE assembly at the Chaos Communication Conference 33C3

27 – 30 December 2016

From December 27 to 30, FSFE will host an assembly during the 33rd Chaos Communication Congress in that we offer a common space to discuss, meet, hack and organise. There will also be several self-organized sessions every day about various aspects of or around Free Software. More details are coming soon. Tomorrow, Tuesday November 29, at 14:15 - 15:30 the FSFE Founding President Georg Greve will participate with a talk in the panel "Free Software: the future for the European institutions", which takes place during the afternoon sessions of DIGITEC 2016 at SQUARE - Brussels Meeting Centre (Room 213-215). Matthias Kirschner, the current FSFE President will be present, too.

The FSFE will be present with a booth in FIfF-Konferenz 2016 – in.visible systems at the Mathematikgebäude TU Berlin (MA), Hörsaal HE101, Workshopraum MA141, from November 25th till the 27th. The Forum InformatikerInnen für Frieden organizes this conference which will cover topics related to hacking, science, politics and activism. The entrance to this event is for free so please join us! We will have some nice merchandise, stickers and promo material, so don't hesitate and come to say hi!!

15 years FSFE - birthday party in c-base, Berlin, Germany

On Saturday, September 3rd, we invite for the FSFE birthday party to celebrate 15 years of existence in c-base - the famous hacker space in Berlin, Germany. Opening is directly after the end of Saturday's FSFE summit at 18:00 hours with a warm up and get together. At 20:00 there will be around one hour of program in that we shed light on FSFE's local heroes that keep us growing strong. Afterwards, we start the party with music and drinks - a nice time to revel in the past and look forward to the future.

Digital self-defence, playing soccer with MBots, Raspberry Music project are the main tracks of the Free Software Event at the Tilburg Library, along with informational stands and many DIY activities. Participants are the FSFE (Digi-Talk Maurice Verheesen), Ubuntu.NL, LibreOffice, NLLGG (Dutch Linux Users Group) and more. DIY activities involve the Raspberry TEdCase 3D-printing, 3D-Virtual Reality and more. Entrance is free. The Event starts at 12.00hrs and ends at 17.00hrs.

At this year's Linuxwochen Wien, FSFE will participate in a few ways. Franz Gratzer, designer for FSFE, will give a talk about the history of the FLOSS game "Trigger Rally" and a workshop of how to design and develop their own race tracks. Simon Hornbachner, local coordinator Linz, will be talking about Copyleft - what it actually means, some common misconceptions and why it isn't only beneficiary for "the community", but also for companies. There will also be a FSFE information booth and the local team is looking forward to everyone to meet!

Peter Bubestinger and Till Jaeger from FSFE and others will give insights on how memory institutions and cultural heritage organisations worldwide are increasingly empowered by Free Software licensed tools. This workshop is part of the PREFORMA project, in which 3 format conformance checkers have been developed to check and validate document-, image- and audiovisual files. Topics like format obsolescence, vendor lock-in or interoperability issues of proprietary implementations are being addressed in this workshop.

It is well known that Android is an Open Source Operating System. But in practice, in order to use it a lot of non-free and locked down platforms are needed, like Google Play. F-Droid aims to fill this gap by offering a free platform that you can use to install and distribute your applications. The session will be provided by Daniel Martí, a lead F-Droid developer.
