campaign to celebrate this day as an "I love Free Software" - Day. Our online
campaign aims at rising awareness to Free Software and the
passionate, hard-working people behind it. You can participate in our
campaign from all over the world. Show them that you appreciate their
work – it could make all the difference!

This year on Valentine's Day, the FSFE organises an "I love Free
Software" event at the Unperfekthaus in Essen. We would
like to invite all supporters of Free Software to celebrate this day
together with us. During the day, there will be workshops and talks
concerning various topics about Free Software. In the evening there will
be a live concert with four bands that are willing to play in support of
Free Software. For more information have

The "Chemnitz Linux Days" is a conference that deals with Linux and Open Source Software . It is open for everyone, novizes and experts alike. The FSFE will be present with a booth where you can inform yourself about our work and to get to know the people behind FSFE. In addition,

In July, FSFE will be at RMLL (Libre Software Meeting) the yearly non commercial conference with talks, workshops and round tables about Free Software and its uses. The RMLL goal is to provide a place for exchange between Free Software developers, users and stakeholders. For the first time, RMLL will be in Switzerland; at Geneva's Plainpalais. Today, on 17 January 2012, Matthias Kirschner - Fellowship Coordinator of FSFE - gives a talk about
"Secure/Zensur Boot: Wer kontrolliert den Computer?". The presentation takes place in
the c-base (Rungestrasse 20, 10179 Berlin), and is part of the "Netzpolitische Abend", hosted
by the Digitale Gesellschaft - an interest organisation concerned about internet politics and pro digital civil rights. The speech is in German. Admission is free. Event begins at 20:00.

“Sustainable IT through Open Standards”. The presentation takes place in
the ETH Zurich, Building HG (Rämistrasse 101), Room F33.5, and is hosted
by [project 21], a student organisation concerned with sustainability.

WIPO's
Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights, FSFE
will work with national delegates from around the world to
improve conditions for the sharing of knowledge.
Negotiations will center on a possible "Broadcasting
Treaty", a plan to introduce a new kind of copyright which
companies can acquire merely by distributing a movie,

is invited to have a nice evening at the Metalab with us.

FSFE will take part in many ways at the RMLL, one of the
biggest Free Software events in France, from July 9th to 14th.
While of course present with its famous information booth both
during the week-end ("journées grand public") and during the
week, FSFE also proposes some talks this year.
President Karsten Gerloff will give a talk on
Centralised Internet Services and Problems of Power (13.07.,
15:20), France Coordinator Hugo Roy will talk about
the battle fought by Free Software for HTML5 online videos,
UK coordinator Sam Tuke will speak about the FreedomBox concept
and practical applications.
Several other speakers have also been invited to talk about
topics around the decentralisation of the Internet.
Whether at the booth, at the conferences or for a drink
on evenings, we look forward to seeing you there!

Free Software intergroup at the European Parliament

On Thursday July 7, FSFE's President Karsten Gerloff will speak
about Free Software to Members of the European Parliament. The
presentation together with a representative of APRIL will take
place at the first meeting of the Parliament's Intergroup on
Free Software and new media in Strasbourg.

Matthias Kirschner, FSFE coordinator for activities in Germany,
will present the successful PDFReaders
campaign started last Autumn. The concept –
removing advertisings for non-free software from public sector
organisations' websites – will be explained in detail, as well
as the keys to succeed in a similar action.
The talk will take place in "room 41-A fisl 1" on the 1st of
July, at 16:00 in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

On Sunday, May the 22nd, FSFE offers a robots workshop in its
Berlin office, Linienstraße 141, 10115 Berlin.
Flashed with Free Software, these robots can be programmed very
easily to explore the room, follow a black line on the ground,
avoid obstacles… The aim being that the participants can then
offer such a nice workshop in schools.

prospective challenges for Free Software. The event takes place on 26 March
2011 from 9:30 to 17:30 in the IT faculty of the Augsburg University of

This month again, the Berlin Fellowship meeting will be in the Newthinking Store, in the Tucholskystr. 48, 10117 Berlin.
We'll be there from 19:30. Ali Gündüz will make a presentation there on "Free Software GSM". The talk will be aimed at those without any prior knowledge of GSM
protocols. "You have gotten used to the idea of Android and Meego? Let's see what
you'll think about the possibility of Free Software handling what your
cell phone is primarily made for" announces Ali Gündüz.

FSFE has been invited by the Berlin Debating Union to make a speech at its first Knowledge Sharing Evening of the year. Matthias Kirschner's speech will begin at 7p.m., and then the public will have time to ask questions. on 8.15p.m., a debate around the topic of Free Software will start. Therefore, the Berlin Fellowship meeting of November 11th will exceptionnally take place in the Humboldt University's main building, in the Orbis Humboldtianus, above the Audimax (entrance Dorotheenstr 17). The Knowledge Sharing Evening will attract students from all the universities of Berlin, we hope to see you there too !

At the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva,
the Standing Committee on the Law of Patents meets for
its 15th session. Topics to be discussed include the
patentability of software and the relation between patents
and standards. FSFE's President Karsten Gerloff is
participating in the meeting in order to help create
rules, laws and practices that are favourable to Free
Software.

premises of the ETH Zurich in the CHN building of the Zentrum campus,
Universitätsstrasse 16, Zurich. Reinhard Müller will hold a speech titled
"Free yourself - how to save the world in five easy steps" (in German),
and FSFE will present its work and the Fellowship at an information
booth. Admission to the event is free of charge, and no registration is

Internet Governance Forum 2010 in Vilnius, Lithuania

Karsten Gerloff, FSFE's President, will speak at a workshop of this year's Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Vilnius, Lithuania. The subject is "Data in the Cloud: Where do Open Standards fit in?". The workshop will take place on Thursday, September the 16th, from 14:15 to 16:15.
FSFE has been involved in the IGF since its first edition in 2006, and is part of the Dynamic Coalition on Open Standards.

The Department of Business Information Management and Logistics of the
Technical University Tampere and the Agora Center of the University
Jyväskylä have done a study about Free Software in Finnish schools.
On 12 May 2010 at 18:00 in Demola, Väinö Linnan aukio 15, 3rd floor,
Tampere, researcher Kimmo Wideroos will present the results and
conclusions, and afterwards there will be an open discussion about the
potential and possibilities of Free Software in schools.

FSFE is receiving this year's
Theodor
Heuss Medal. On Friday, FSFE's President
Karsten Gerloff will speak on "Capitalism and
Responsibility" during a colloquium organised by the
Theodor Heuss Foundation. Gesine Schwan, a former
candidate for the President of Germany, will open this
event on "The social market economy and
globalisation". The award ceremony will take place on
Saturday from 10:30 to 12:15. It will be recorded by
the German TV channel Phoenix.
Both events are by invitation only. We have a small number

14:00 to 18:00 at Literaturhaus Stuttgart. The award

European Licensing and Legal Workshop on the 8th and 9th of April 2010 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This conference will provide legal experts a forum for discussions on supply chain management, compliance procedures, licence management and other legal issues related to the growth of the European Free Software market.

ACTA
is an international agreement on copyright and patents which
several developed countries are currently negotiating in secret.
While no official texts have been published, numerous leaked
documents indicate that the treaty would further restrict our
freedom to share and re-use knowledge. The European
Commission's DG TRADE is holding a stakeholders' consultation
meeting to inform Europeans about the state of play of the
negotiations. FSFE's President Karsten Gerloff will attend the
meeting and represent the interests of Free Software.
The event is open to the public, but registration is required.
The European Commission promises to make a web stream of the
event available.

WIPO meeting on implementation of Development Agenda, Geneva, Switzerland
16 November to 20 November 2009
Thanks the consistent support by FSFE and other
organisations, the WIPO Development Agenda is finally on
the way to implementation. FSFE's President Karsten
Gerloff will participate in the meeting of the Committee
on November 16th to 20th to make sure that Free Software and Open
Standards take their place in this process.
FSFE is a registered observer to WIPO. The event is not

OpenRheinRuhr 2009 in Bottrop is the largest exhibition
concerning Free Software in Germany's Ruhr Area. Some of
our German Fellows help to organize this convention or
present Free Software projects they are working on. Hence
FSFE will not miss the opportunity to contribute to this event
with a booth. On November 7 and 8 we bring the idea of Free
Software and its related topics to the public again.
This time we intent to cross the border from IT into the Arts
by providing a discussion lounge to broach the issues of
"Software as a cultural technique" and "Coding as an art".
In addition to the booth a social event for Fellows will be
held on 2009-11-07.

Unlike proprietary software, the Free Software requirements are
not about remuneration, but about maintaining the Freedom of
users of the software to use, study, modify and distribute. That
places some interesting requirements on manufacturers of devices
that use this software.

chtinux, a Linux User Group which is installed around there, has proposed to the Fellowship, as it did last year, to take part in the Braderie. The FSFE, and especially the Fellowship's stand, will get much visibility, since millions of people of numerous nations take a walk on Lille's streets. Come to discover this beautiful city and to eat some Braderie's culinary specialities like clams ! And above all, come in order to support the Fellowship !

As part of the OpenRuhr initiative the "Uploadparty" takes place on
September 5. The goal of the monthly uploadparties is to enlarge free
culture in the Ruhr area. At this event everybody can bring his own
paper pictures from the area, scan them, and make them available under
the Creative Commons By license.

Meeting) is taking place at Nantes. Rainer Kersten will organise a FSFE
booth there.
RMLL is the most important Free Software event at France. This year,
GNU/Linux User Group Nantes is expecting some 5000 visitors at the
University of Nantes.

Second European Licensing and Legal Workshop for Free Software

The second European Licensing and Legal Workshop organised by the
Freedom Task Force of the FSFE will
be held at the Hotel Okura on the 23rd and the 24th of April 2009 in

discussions on supply chain management, compliance procedures, licence
management, community interaction, and other legal issues related to the

Microsoft OOXML -- what happened those times

On 12 March Torsten Werner and Michael Schinagl, who both participated
in the standardisation process of the proprietary Microsoft OOXML
standard, will talk about their experiences in this process. The Berlin

The FSFE will be attending the NLUUG Autumn Conference on Thursday 6th November. This year's theme is 'mobility'. Feel free to come to our booth and ask about Free Software!
Shane Coughlan, Freedom Task Force coordinator at FSFE, will also deliver talk entitled 'The strategic implementation of free software in business' at the CELF Embedded Linux Conference Europe 2008 at the same location on the following day, Friday 7th November.
The successful implementation of Free Software requires an understanding of the best policy and processes applicable to its context. Shane will discuss how FSFE's legal project and its European Legal Network have engaged with this issue by producing generic market knowledge for supply and purchasing contracts, work flow documents and deployment methodology.

Fellowship's stand at the Braderie de Lille, Lille (France)

The so-called "Braderie de Lille" (Lille's flea market) is a big outside-event which has taken place every year since the 12th century during the first week-end of september.
chtinux, a Linux User Group which is installed around there, has proposed to the Fellowship to take part in the Braderie. The FSFE, and especially the Fellowship's stand, will get much visibility, since millions of people of numerous nations take a walk on Lille's streets. Come to discover this beautiful city and to eat some Braderie's culinary specialities like clams ! And above all, come in order to support the Fellowship !

SELF has contributed on various levels to freedom in software and
education. The work of the SELF Legal Experts Group (LEG) has helped
to evolve a better understanding of Open Standards and provided a
reference line for free educational materials. The coordinator of the
SELF LEG, FSFE president Georg Greve, will provide an insight on how
SELF has helped advance the state of the art, and how the work done in
the SELF consortium will provide lasting benefit to the Free Software
community.

The talk is about the importance of the four freedoms to use, study, share and improve software and their influence in politics and economy. Target audience are beginners, or people who want to get some ideas how to explain this topic to beginners. The speech takes place at the BusinessForum (EG) and will be held in German.

FSFE's Freedom Task Force will host the first European Licensing and Legal Workshop for Free Software on Friday the 11th of April in Amsterdam,
The Netherlands. The venue for this meeting is the InterContinental Amstel Hotel. The event is targeted towards large projects and medium to
large enterprises wishing to discuss their existing licence compliance processes. Parties attending are expected to contribute to issues
ranging from process development through to optimising purchasing contract language for the benefit of the European Free Software community.

Free Software movement has moved deep into the mainstream of ICT

Colloquium on Free Software and science

On Thursday June 7, 2007 at 3:30 pm in the V G Kulkarni Auditorium at
Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) in Mumbai, India, Georg
Greve gives a talk about Free Software and science.
Free Software and science share common roots, and benefit society in
several similar ways. In his talk, Mr Greve will explain the concept of
Free Software and how it relates to maintaining our scientific basis as a
society. As a practical example of this collaboration, the talk will give
a brief introduction of the Science, Education and Learning in Freedom
project, in which the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Tata
Institute of Fundamental Research plays a crucial role. The talk will
close with an overview of how all of this relates to the global political
trends of knowledge monopolisation, and the Access to Knowledge
initiative.

The eLiberatica Conference is the most important romanian event
concerning Free Software. It will be held on the 18th and the 19th
of May, in Braşov, Romania, and is organized by ROSI, a romanian
assocition advocating Free Software, and by Agora Media, a romanian
media group. eLiberatica's purpose is to unify pomotion of Free
Software throughout Romania, and encouraging its adoption by business
through grassroots organization. The conference therefore addresses
programmers, university students, and business people. Georg Greve
will deliver a talk on Open Standards and Free Competition.

Evening of freedom in digital society
04 April 2007
On April 4th, 18:00 pm, Georg Greve and Jonas Oberg will give three
public talks. Georg will present the FSFE, and Free Software issues
in e-government, and Jonas will talk about the SELF project. This
event will take place in Belgrade, it will also be an opportunity
for the Free Software community in Serbia to meet, with people also
coming from Macedonia and Croatia.

On Sunday April 1st, at 17h00, in Brussels, Richard Stallman
will present the current status of the global project to update
Free Software's keystone licence: the GNU GPL. This talk will
be Stallman's first since the release of discussion draft 3 -
the draft crafted to block patent deals such as that of
Novell+Microsoft. This draft has also been simplified, and the
DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) and tivoisation clauses
have also been altered significantly.
The Fellowship card and its practical use

The Fellowship group in Düsseldorf has invited GnuPG's principal author
Werner Koch to speak about the Fellowship crypto card and its practical
use. The event starts on 28 March 2007 at 19:00 in the "Gaststätte

During the second leg of the SELF project, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, TIFR will organise the second BOARD meeting in Mumbai, India.
The issues that will be discussed are related to SELF Support Programme (SSP), Finances and budget, Expert groups, and other strategic plans. The week long meeting comprises of two days workshop sessions, three days board meeting, one day SELF conference and one day for a social event.

The 5th international conference on GPLv3 will be a 2-day event
held in Japan on November 21st and 22nd. Organised by Free
Software Initiative Japan, this event will host experts and
interested parties who will make presentations and participate
in discussions about Free Software's cornerstone licence. FSFE
will be represented by Georg Greve (President) and Ciarán
O'Riordan. The joint goals are to maximise awareness of the
GPLv3 process and to give attendees the information necessary to
make informed comments on the licence drafts and to help them to
explain the proposed changes to others.

Information Society (WSIS) will be held between 14th and 18th
November in Tunis. Georg C. F. Greve, President of FSFE, will be
working to
promote digital freedom and equality in discussions and
side-events with other participants from Governments, Civil Society,
the Private Sector and the United Nations.
15 November to 17 November 2005
From 15. to 17. November, FSFE will be at the LinuxWorld Conference
and Expo 2005. FSFE will be present with a booth. Please take the
opportunity to get informed about Free Software, the work of the
FSFE and the Fellowship. There will also be the chance to get
informed about the OpenPGP smartcard.

The World Summit on the Information Society and the role of Local Authorities is held in Bilbao, Spain between the 9th and 11th of november. Jonas Öberg
will participate in the workshop on Free Software on the 10th of november
at 16.45 to discuss the importance of Free Software in government

Fellowship meeting in Vienna
04 November 2005
On 4 November, starting at 18:00, a Fellowship meeting will take place in
the "Käuzchen" in Vienna, Gardegasse 8. Karin Kosina and Reinhard Müller
will inform about the work of the FSFE and discuss with interested
people.
The invitation is adressed at everybody who is interested in the FSFE,
wants to get active himself or just likes Free Software and wants to get
in contact with other enthusiasts, not only at those who are part of the
Fellowship.

The Swedish Internet infrastructure foundation is organising the
conference Internetdagarna 2005 at the Clarion Hotel in Stockholm,
Sweden, between the 24th and 25th of october. Several issues will
be discussed during the conference, including a discussion on Sweden's
IT policy and the dangers of a digital divide. FSF Europe's Jonas Öberg
will participate throughout the conference
13 October to 15 October 2005
At the Third Conference on Free Software in the Amazonas, Georg Greve will meet with local and international Free Software activists to work on questions related to Free Software and Development.
11 October to 12 October 2005
Stefano Maffulli, Italian Chancellor, will be speaking at the biggest professional conference of the Hungarian Internet users.
The event will see participants from the communication and financial experts, from governmental institutions, and representatives of Telkom, ISP and other service institutions.
The subject of this year's conference is: what possibilities are there on
the Internet for the media and communication industry, and what sort of
business activities can be carried out with the help of the Internet, with
special attention to those economic activities.

On the 3rd of October, Jonas Öberg will participate in a workshop
on the World Summit of the Information Society, focused on Internet
Governance and Human Rights. The workshop is organised by the
Collegium for Development Studies at Uppsala University, Sweden, and
will be held at the Hammarskog Conference Centre, Sweden.

FSFE will take part in this final preparatory meeting for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). We will contribute the perspective of Free Software to the various meetings and negotiations.

FSFE's president Georg Greve has been invited to speak at the Latin American and Caribbean Conference on Development and Use of Free Software. He will talk about Free Software as a social movement and its interaction in the political field, in particular on United Nations level, such as WIPO. Georg Greve is also looking forward to a session on the Free Software Foundations with participants from FSF Latin America, FSF India and FSF Europe. During this event he will share with the audience some of the work that FSFE has done in the past years.

London, August 13th is the Annual General Meeting of UK-based
Association For Free Software (AFFS). This year Ciaran
O'Riordan will be giving a talk about what has been achieved and
what we must do to prepare for the future battles over software

Per la seconda parte dell'Incontro Intersessione Intergovernativo
dell'Organizzazione Mondiale per la Proprietà Intellettuale (WIPO)
FSFE manderà una delegazione a Ginevra. In coordinamento con
altri attori della società civile, FSFE lavorerà per indirizzare
il lavoro della WIPO verso una ricchezza intellettuale crescente e
per affrontare le necessità e le richieste del Software Libero.

"Arte, cultura conoscenza, democrazia". Il presidente della sezione italiana
Stefano Maffulli sarà presente insieme ad altri partecipanti, come il
Ministro della Cultura brasiliano Gilberto Gil, il responsabile italiano di
Creative Commons Juan Carlos De Martin e molti altri.

Alla "WSIS Contributory Conference" di Vienna, Georg Greve terrà
un intervento su "Software libero come ricchezza intellettuale per
la società dell'informazione". La conferenza mira a produrre una
"Dichiarazione di Vienna sulla creatività" che richiamerà
l'attenzione sul fatto che la creatività è una risorsa naturale
della mente umana.

Dalle 15:30, dopo una
manifestazione in strada contro i brevetti sul software, FSFE organizzerà
un Freedom Party per celebrare la libertà digitale come parte della sua
campagna di Fellowship. Il luogo di ritrovo non
è stato ancora stabilito, ma sarà vicino a piazza de Meeus, dove termina il
corteo. Piazza de Meeus è una piazza erbosa che sta su entrambi i lati di Rue
de Luxembourg, a metà strada tra il Parlamento Europeo e la stazione della
metropolitana Trone.

Karin Kosina aprirà l'evento con un discorso introduttivo il
ventiquattro maggio e parlerà dell'importanza del termine "Free
Software" il ventisei. Georg Greve terrà un discorso sul Software
Libero nel B2B e nelle pubbliche amministrazioni il venticinque
maggio. Entrambi prenderanno anche parte ad un dibattito.

Georg Greve parteciperà ad una Conferenza sull'Accesso alla
Conoscenza (A2K) organizzata dal gruppo Trans Atlantic Consumer
Dialogue. All'evento, a Londra, rappresentanti dei consumatori,
bibliotecari, esperti governativi ed organizzazioni internazionali e
di società civile lavoreranno sulle proposte per un Trattato di
Accesso alla Conoscenza.
Seminario della Banca Mondiale sul procurement, Torino

Invitato dalla Banca Mondiale, Georg Greve parlerà a
professionisti IT che partecipano a un seminario sul procurement
dei servizi informativi, segnalando i vantaggi specifici del
software libero per i progetti di sviluppo.
Riunione WIPO sull'agenda per lo sviluppo
11 April to 15 April 2005
Dal 12 al 15 aprile, la FSFE parteciperà alla riunione
intergovernativa inter-sessione dell'Organizzazione Mondiale della
Proprietà Intellettuale (WIPO) a Ginevra. Visto che sono stati invitati
a partecipare solo gli osservatori permanenti, molte organizzazioni
della società civile non saranno ammesse a questa riunione di importanza
critica per gli sviluppi futuri del WIPO. La delegazione della FSFE
è per ora composta da Georg Greve, Karsten Gerloff e Volker Grassmuck;
insieme ad altri esponenti della società civile, essa cercherà di riorientare
l'azione del WIPO verso l'aumento della ricchezza intellettuale e la
giusta considerazione dei temi legati al software libero.

I giorni 4 e 5 di marzo 2005 si terrà all'Istanbul Bilgi University
una conferenza sul Software Libero. L'attenzione sarà sulle
opportunità che il Software Libero offre all'economia turca. Il 4 di
marzo Georg Greve terrà un discorso su aspetti commerciali, pratici e
sociologici del Software Libero e del Progetto GNU.

il 4 e il 5 marzo. La FSF Europe sarà rappresentata da
Henrik Sandklef, insieme all'organizzazione danese IT-Politisk

interventi al "Free and Open Source Software Workshop" di Damasco.
Karin parlerà degli aspetti economici del software libero e Jonas

all'Università di Berna, Svizzera. Durante la sua lezione

FSFE parteciperà al World Social Forum che si terrà a Porto Alegre,
in Brasile dal ventisei al trentun gennaio 2005. Il 26 gennaio Georg
Greve parteciperà ad un evento dal titolo "Digital
Revolution: Knowledge Sharing x Impresionment on Information
Society". L'evento avrà luogo nella stanza A105 dalle 15:30 alle
18:30.
Software Libero - sfide nell'era digitale, Dublino, Irlanda

Venerdì 14 gennaio 2005 alle 19:30, Georg Greve terrà un intervento
sulle sfide del software libero nell'era digitale e sul lavoro della
Free Software Foundation Europe. La conferenza, aperta al pubblico,
si terrà nel Theatre Q, Arts Block del UCD campus.

Dal 26 al 28 novembre 2004 si terrà a Bolzano la SFScon.
Due membri della Free Software Foundation Europe terranno tre interventi:
Werner Koch parlerà a proposito di "Privacy e tecniche di crittografia",
Alessandro Rubini presenterà il "Software Libero nella scuola" e darà
un'"Introduzione alla programmazione del kernel".

Questo congresso sul Software Libero, organizzato interamente dalla
comunità del Software Libero brasiliana, si terrà nel "Anhembi Convention
Center", San Paolo in Brasile. Georg Greve aprirà il congresso con
un intervento nella giornata di giovedì.

"Where next for copyright in Europe?". La lista dei relatori include
anche Georg Jakob, Membro della FSF Europe, che parlerà dei vincitori
