The
Freedom Task Force, FSFE's legal and licensing department, will hold the third
European Licensing and Legal Workshop on the 8th and 9th of April 2010 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This conference will provide legal experts a forum for discussions on supply chain management, compliance procedures, licence management and other legal issues related to the growth of the European Free Software market.
There is limited space available at the event and attendance for non-network members is by invitation only.

Fellowship meeting in Hamburg, Germany

FSFE will have a booth at “LinuxTage”, one of the most important event
about Free Software in Germany. The event will feature Martin
Gollowitzer's
OpenPGP
smartcard workshop, and talks by Lena Simon on
Women
and Free Software, FSFE's German Coordinator Matthias Kirschner about

misunderstandings of Free Software and FSFE's President, Karsten
Gerloff, will speak of
Strategic
Licensing. As in the last years a ticket for the conference will cost
€ 5. Reduced fee will be € 3. Tickets are valid on both days and can be
bought directly at the entrance to the conference. A reservation is
neither necessary nor possible. A ticket pre-sale is also not planned. The
event takes place at Hörsaal- und Seminar-Gebäude der Technischen
Universität Chemnitz, Reichenhainer Straße 90, 09126 Chemnitz.

At this year's CeBIT, FSFE is represented with two
speakers, bringing new insights and taking a look ahead at
what the future holds.
On Wednesday at 13:00, FSFE's Germany coordinator Matthias
Kirschner will present "8 Misunderstandings about Free
Software - or are they lies?" On Thursday at 14:00, FSFE's President Karsten Gerloff
will speak about "Opening up the market for Free Software:
The battle for Interoperability". Both talks will take
place in Hall 2.
Registration for the event is possible.
Fellowship meeting in Göteborg, Sweden

Starting Wednesday, March 3, the Gothenburg FSFE team is reviving its Fellowship group with monthly meetings. The meetings will take place in

this meeting is to provide Free Software developers a place to

Stuttgart Open Fair. His talk "Free Software - More than just a
Development strategy" will be part of a workshop. The workshop will

standardisation organisations deal with patented
technologies. The
WIPO Standing Committee on the Law of
Patents is the highest level forum dealing with this
question. For FSFE, Karsten Gerloff and Hugo Roy will
participate in the meeting to advance the interests of
Free Software.

mainstream: Free Software in Europe” on December 2nd. The Free Software
World Conference is jointly organised by the Spanish regional governments
of Extremadura and Andalusia. The event is public.

The European Commission's project on interoperability for
eGovernment services is organising and information day on
the European Interoperability Strategy. FSFE's President
Karsten Gerloff will participate in the discussions to
make sure that the voice of Free Software and Open
Standards is heard.

FSFE will be present with a booth at this years Brandenburger Linux Info Tag
(BLIT). The Fellowship Group Berlin will man a booth to inform visitors about
various aspects of Free Software. Also T-shirts and books about Free Software
will be sold. The event starts at 10 am and takes place at the
University Campus Griebnitzsee in Potsdam.
Admission is free as in free beer.
WIPO meeting on implementation of Development Agenda, Geneva, Switzerland

Thanks the consistent support by FSFE and other
organisations, the WIPO Development Agenda is finally on
the way to implementation. FSFE's President Karsten
Gerloff will participate in the meeting of the Committee
on November 16th to 20th to make sure that Free Software and Open
Standards take their place in this process.
FSFE is a registered observer to WIPO. The event is not
open to the public.

OpenRheinRuhr 2009 in Bottrop is the largest exhibition
concerning Free Software in Germany's Ruhr Area. Some of
our German Fellows help to organize this convention or
present Free Software projects they are working on. Hence
FSFE will not miss the opportunity to contribute to this event
with a booth. On November 7 and 8 we bring the idea of Free
Software and its related topics to the public again.
This time we intent to cross the border from IT into the Arts
by providing a discussion lounge to broach the issues of
"Software as a cultural technique" and "Coding as an art".
In addition to the booth a social event for Fellows will be
held on 2009-11-07.

Unlike proprietary software, the Free Software requirements are
not about remuneration, but about maintaining the Freedom of
users of the software to use, study, modify and distribute. That
places some interesting requirements on manufacturers of devices
that use this software.

The Library of Alexandria, Egypt, is holding a three-day
workshop to introduce judges, lawyers, and researchers
from Egypt and the Arab world to new tools for the
dissemination of knowledge. With representatives of Egypt's supreme court in attendance, FSFE's President Karsten
Gerloff will be leading two sessions in the
workshop, one
on the history and basic concepts of Free Software, and
the other on Free Software licensing.
Software Freedom Day in Vienna, Austria

From September 18-19 Matthias Kirschner will be in Leipzig to
participate at the Software Freedom Day. The celebration starts on
Friday at 6 pm in the sublab, Karl-Heine-Straße 93 04229 Leipzig. There
will be cake and everything else you need to celebrate Free Software.
On Saturday 2 pm Matthias will give a talk about Free Software and the
Software Freedom Day at the street festival. This speech will also take
place in the Karl-Heine-Straße 93. Afterwards there will be a small
FSFE booth, to answer questions around Free Software. Everybody is
invited to join.
Stand de la Fellowship à la Braderie de Lille, Lille (France)

La braderie de Lille est un grand évènement qui se déroule en plein air
pendant le premier week-end de septembre.
chtinux, un groupe
d'utilisateurs Linux de Lille a proposé à la Fellowship, comme l'an dernier, de participer à la
Braderie. La FSFE, et plus particulièrement le stand de la Fellowship, va
attirer nombre de regards curieux, puisque des millions de visiteurs de
différents pays sont attendus dans les rues de Lille. Venez découvrir cette
ville magnifique et manger quelques spécialités culinaires de la braderie
comme des moules ! Et surtout, venez nombreux soutenir la Fellowship !
Le stand de la Fellowship sera situé sur la Place du Vieux Marché aux chevaux.

As part of the OpenRuhr initiative the "Uploadparty" takes place on
September 5. The goal of the monthly uploadparties is to enlarge free
culture in the Ruhr area. At this event everybody can bring his own
paper pictures from the area, scan them, and make them available under
the Creative Commons By license.

Mondiales du Logiciel Libre. Rainer Kersten y organisera un stand de la
FSFE.
Les RMLL sont l'évènement le plus important sur les Logiciels Libres en
France. Cette année le Groupe d'Utilisateurs de GNU/Linux de Nantes
attend quelque 5000 visiteurs à l'Université de Nantes.

and Politics" as part of the lecture "Free/Libre and Open Source Software
Engineering". He will talk about Free Software in general, categories of

Second European Licensing and Legal Workshop for Free Software

The second European Licensing and Legal Workshop organised by the
Freedom Task Force of the FSFE will
be held at the Hotel Okura on the 23rd and the 24th of April 2009 in
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This conference will provide a forum for
discussions on supply chain management, compliance procedures, licence
management, community interaction, and other legal issues related to the

FSCONS Fellowship meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden

attend an open planning meeting and get-together to discuss FSCONS

Microsoft OOXML -- what happened those times

On 12 March Torsten Werner and Michael Schinagl, who both participated
in the standardisation process of the proprietary Microsoft OOXML
standard, will talk about their experiences in this process. The Berlin

KDE 4.2 release party in Zurich, Switzerland

There will be an event to mark the release of KDE 4.2 in Zurich, Switzerland, on Wednesday 28th January. The event will be held at the Auditorium Maximum at the ETH Zurich, and starts at 17:30.

It is time for a new tradition! A Christmas get-together for Fellows and others in Gothenburg, with technical help for all those interested in Free Culture and Free Software. FFKP (Union for Free Culture and Software) and FSFE (Free Software Foundation Europe) invite you to a get-together with glögg (spiced wine), coffee, cookies and cakes. There will also be a presentation of the FFKP and some of the avtivities planned for 2009. Jeremiah Foster will be there as well offering help for GNU/Linux and other Free Software to anyone who needs it.

meeting at the TIS Innovation Park of Bolzano. The meeting is
open to Fellows and all persons interested in FSFE's work in
Italy and the projects of the Fellowship. The meeting has two
parts. First Patrick Ohnewein, coordinator of the Italian FSFE
group, will talk about the activities of the FSFE and the
Fellowship in Italy. In the second part the Fellows will be
invited to make proposals for and discuss about future
initiatives to promote and help Free Software.

Le jeudi 6 novembre la FSFE participera à la conférence NLUUG d'automne. Le thème de cette année est la mobilité. Nous accueillerons avec plaisir les visiteurs sur notre stand et répondrons volontiers à leurs questions sur le Logiciel Libre. Le lendemain, vendredi 7 novembre, au même endroit, Shane Coughlan, coordinateur de la 'Freedom Task Force' de la FSFE, fera également un exposé intitulé "The strategic implementation of free software in business" («Implémentations stratégiques de Logiciels Libres en entreprise», présentation en anglais) à l'occasion de la CELF, la conférence européenne sur Linux embarqué.
La réalisation réussie d'un Logiciel Libre nécessite une bonne compréhension des politiques et processus les plus adaptés à son contexte. Shane expliquera comment la FSFE, à travers son projet juridique et son réseau juridique européen, contribue à cela en produisant des connaissances commerciales génériques sur les contrats de fourniture et d'acquisition, les documents de travail et les méthodologies de déploiement.

SELF has contributed on various levels to freedom in software and
education. The work of the SELF Legal Experts Group (LEG) has helped
to evolve a better understanding of Open Standards and provided a
reference line for free educational materials. The coordinator of the
SELF LEG, FSFE president Georg Greve, will provide an insight on how
SELF has helped advance the state of the art, and how the work done in
the SELF consortium will provide lasting benefit to the Free Software
community.

protect freedoms of use, study, sharing and improvement in both
technology and educational text. He will review the main challenges
that platforms like SELF may encounter from the legal point of view and
what kind of mechanisms help support reliable legal infrastructure. He

education and support services relating to legal support for Free Software in Europe.

This year's General Assembly of FSFE takes place in Zurich, and as usual,
there will be a social event where the members of the General Assembly
meet Fellows and other local Free Software supporters.
Around 18:20 the crowd will leave from the FSFE office at
Sumatrastrasse 25
and walk through the old town in direction to Bellview.
At 19:00 we will catch a
ferry
from
Zurich Burkiplatz.
At 19:47 the ferry will arrive in Erlenbach where -- due to the weather
conditions -- we will continue the evening with a nice dinner at the
Restaurant Malabar Garden in Kuesnacht
where we expect to be until at least 23:00.

FSFE's Freedom Task Force will host the first European Licensing and Legal Workshop for Free Software on Friday the 11th of April in Amsterdam,
The Netherlands. The venue for this meeting is the InterContinental Amstel Hotel. The event is targeted towards large projects and medium to
large enterprises wishing to discuss their existing licence compliance processes. Parties attending are expected to contribute to issues
ranging from process development through to optimising purchasing contract language for the benefit of the European Free Software community.
This workshop has limited space available and therefore attendance is by invitation only. Projects and companies interested in attending this

FSFE attends FOSDEM, a European Free Software developer conference
organized by volunteers wich takes place from 23rd - 24th of February
in Brussels (Belgium).
The event promotes the widespread use of Free Software, to provide
Free Software developers and communities a place to meet, to get in
touch with other projects, and to promote the development and the
benefits of Free Software solutions.
The FSFE will attend the event with a booth where visitors will be
informed about recent activities, Free Software itself and the

On 11 November, a discussion oriented conference with the title

Dynamic Coalition on Open Standards
sponsors an Open Workshop titled "The Intersection of Open ICT Standards,

Best Practice Workshop on "Open ICT Standards for Greater Citizen Access:

Prof. Arturo Di Corinto will moderate two speeches on the
ethics and practice of free, open source software, by
Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software movement,
and Bruce Perens, founder of the Open Source Initiative.
The event, in collaboration with Free Software Foundation
Europe, the italian Associazione per il Software Libero,
Linux User Group La Sapienza, Wikimedia Italia, will be an
opportunity to listen to the leading actors of the
evolution of free/libre software.
The event will be held Thursday June 7th from 9.30am until
1.30pm at the Aula Magna della Caserma Sani, located in Via
Principe Amedeo, 184. It is reachable walking from Termini
Rail Station or by the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele metro

Colloquium on Free Software and science

On Thursday June 7, 2007 at 3:30 pm in the V G Kulkarni Auditorium at
Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) in Mumbai, India, Georg
Greve gives a talk about Free Software and science.
Free Software and science share common roots, and benefit society in
several similar ways. In his talk, Mr Greve will explain the concept of
Free Software and how it relates to maintaining our scientific basis as a
society. As a practical example of this collaboration, the talk will give
a brief introduction of the Science, Education and Learning in Freedom
project, in which the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Tata
Institute of Fundamental Research plays a crucial role. The talk will
close with an overview of how all of this relates to the global political
trends of knowledge monopolisation, and the Access to Knowledge
initiative.

Free Software and Beyond: Human Rights in the Use of Software and
Other Published Works. Stallman will speak about the history and
philosophy of the Free Software Movement, address how the ideas of Free
Software do or don't extend to other kinds of published
works and explain what the Pirate Party must change in its program
to avoid unintended negative consequences in the software field.

La FSFE sera présente à cette première conférence italienne sur le Logiciel Libre. La première d'une série de rencontres annuelles chargées de favoriser la diffusion du Logiciel Libre en Italie, mais également d'exposer ses résultats, tant en termes économiques et techniques, qu'éthiques, sociaux et philosophiques.
Cette conférence se veut le point de rencontre de tous les acteurs impliqués dans la diffusion et l'usage du Logiciel Libre en Italie et dans le monde, et que tous ceux-ci, employés de sociétés, universitaires, développeurs, chercheurs ou simplement passionnés, puissent y trouver l'occasion de nouvelles collaborations et des opportunités de création de nouveaux projets.
L'objectif des organisateurs est également de proposer la première conférence scientifique sur le Logiciel Libre en Italie.

This A2K conference program focuses on mobilizing Industry, Civil Society, Governments and Technologists, around human rights, human development and the public interest in the domain of innovation and information policy, as well as understanding the theoretical underpinnings of access to knowledge issues. Soirée sur la liberté dans la société numérique

On Sunday April 1st, at 17h00, in Brussels, Richard Stallman
will present the current status of the global project to update
Free Software's keystone licence: the GNU GPL. This talk will
be Stallman's first since the release of discussion draft 3 -
the draft crafted to block patent deals such as that of
Novell+Microsoft. This draft has also been simplified, and the
DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) and tivoisation clauses
have also been altered significantly.

of February in Brussels, Belgium. FOSDEM is a European Free
Software developer conference organized by volunteers.
The FSFE will be present with a booth where visitors will be

Fellowship of the FSFE.
Georg Greve, president of FSFE, will do this year's Closing Keynote,

During the second leg of the SELF project, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, TIFR will organise the second BOARD meeting in Mumbai, India.
The issues that will be discussed are related to SELF Support Programme (SSP), Finances and budget, Expert groups, and other strategic plans. The week long meeting comprises of two days workshop sessions, three days board meeting, one day SELF conference and one day for a social event.

The 5th international conference on GPLv3 will be a 2-day event
held in Japan on November 21st and 22nd. Organised by Free
Software Initiative Japan, this event will host experts and
interested parties who will make presentations and participate
in discussions about Free Software's cornerstone licence. FSFE
will be represented by Georg Greve (President) and Ciarán
O'Riordan. The joint goals are to maximise awareness of the
GPLv3 process and to give attendees the information necessary to
make informed comments on the licence drafts and to help them to
explain the proposed changes to others.

At the "Tiroler Linuxtag", the last event in the Austrian "Linuxwochen"
series, both Reinhard Müller and Patrick Ohnewein hold a keynote.
Reinhard Müller gives a general overview on Free Software and informs
about the Fellowship, and Patrick Ohnewein speaks about CoCOS, a
competence center about Free Software, and about Free Software in
Southern Tyrol.
The event takes place on 9 September 2006 from 10:00 to 17:00 at the

The 4th international conference for drafting version 3
of the GNU GPL will take place in Bangalore, India on August
23rd and 24th.
The goals of the international conferences are to raise
awareness of the proposed changes for the GNU GPL, and
to explain the public consultation process so as to
encourage maximal participation.
The 2nd draft of GPLv3, launched on July 27th, will be
discussed at this conference.

2006, 10:00, to Friday, 2 June 2006, 22:00, in the Urania building,
Uraniastraße 1, First District, Vienna. Admission is free.
FSFE is present with a booth. On all three days of the event, members of
the FSFE, Fellows, and volunteers are available at the booth to inform
about the work of the FSFE and about the Fellowship.

Hearing for Microsoft Antitrust case, European Court,
Luxembourg

The Grand Jury of the EU Court of Justice is ready for the big hearing on the
Microsoft Antitrust Case. The hearing will take place in the Grande Salle of the
EU Court, from the 24th until the 28th of April. Georg Greve president of FSFE,
Carlo Piana FSFE's lawyer on the case and Andrew Tridgell of the Samba Team will
be present at the event to defend the Court from Microsoft's legal team efforts of
circumventing once again their obligations.

At the first international conference on Access to Knowledge, held at
Yale Law School, Karsten Gerloff will moderate a panel discussion on
"Licensing Frameworks for Access to Knowledge". The goal of the
conference is to come up with a new analytic framework for analysing the
possibly distortive effects of public policies relying exclusively on
copyright and patents. Participants will be looking for alternative ways
to foster greater access to knowledge in the digitally connected
environment.

The 7th edition of the Free Software Forum (FISL) will once more take place in Porto Alegre,
Brazil and also host the second international conference on GPLv3. FSFE will be
represented at this event by its president, Georg Greve, and FSFE's Brussels representative,
Ciaran O'Riordan. Both will speak at the GPLv3 event, and participate during the main FISL event:
Georg Greve will give one of the opening talks, titled
"Free Software - Social Movement or Technological
Revolution?" and Ciaran O'Riordan will talk about work against software patents. Both will
also work with FSFE's sister association, the FSF Latin America and meet the local Free Software community
to strengthen the international Free Software network.

Ciaran O'Riordan and Gareth Bowker will speak in London on
why and what FSFE does to prevent legislative harm to
software freedom - harm such as that caused by patenting
software or distorting copyright. O'Riordan will also
discuss the GPLv3 and its year-long public consultation

On 18th March, Richard Stallman will talk in Turin about the
future of Free Software, introducing the Italian audience to the updating
process of the GNU General Public License ("the GPL"), the license that
protects the freedom of about 100 million software users in the world,
being the most used license for Free Software.

The Swedish Internet infrastructure foundation is organising the
conference Internetdagarna 2005 at the Clarion Hotel in Stockholm,

Stefano Maffulli, Italian Chancellor, will be speaking at the biggest professional conference of the Hungarian Internet users.
The event will see participants from the communication and financial experts, from governmental institutions, and representatives of Telkom, ISP and other service institutions.

the Internet for the media and communication industry, and what sort of
business activities can be carried out with the help of the Internet, with

At the WSIS Contributory Conference in Vienna, Georg Greve will hold a speech "Free Software as intellectual wealth for the information society". The conference aims to come to a "Vienna Declaration on Creativity" which will call attention to the fact that creativity is a natural resource of the human mind.

Staring 14h30, after
a
street
demonstration against software patents, FSFE will be organising a
Freedom Party to celebrate digital freedom as part of its
Fellowship campaign. The venue hasn't been set yet,
but it will be close to Square de Meeus, where the street demonstration ends. Square de Meeus
is a grassy square that sits on either side of Rue de Luxembourg,
half-way between the European Parliament and Trone metro station.

Karin Kosina will open the event with a keynote on May 24th, and will speak about the importance of the term "Free Software" on May 26th. Georg Greve will give a talk about Free Software in B2B and public administrations on May 25th. Both will also take part in panel discussions.

Georg Greve will participate in a Conference on Access to Knowledge (A2K), organised by the group Trans Atlantic Consumer Dialogue. At the London event, consumer representatives, librarians, experts from governments, international and civil society organizations will work on proposals for an Access to Knowledge Treaty.
World Bank procurement training, Turin, Italy

At the invitation of the World Bank, Georg Greve will speak to IT and procurement professionals attending a training in procurement of information systems. He will signal the specific advantages of Free Software for development projects.
WIPO Meeting on Development Agenda

From 12. April to 15. April, the FSFE will participate in the
inter-sessional intergovernmental meeting of the World Intellectual
Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva. As only permanent observers
were invited to participate, most Civil Society organisations will
not be allowed to attend this highly critical meeting on the future
agenda of WIPO. The FSFE delegation so far consists of Georg Greve,
Karsten Gerloff and Volker Grassmuck. Together with other Civil
Society actors, they will work to see WIPOs mission reoriented
towards increasing intellectual wealth and see Free Software
questions properly addressed.

A conference on Free Software will be held at Istanbul Bilgi
University on March 4th and 5th 2005. The focus will be on the opportunities
Free Software offers for the Turkish economy. On March 4th, Georg Greve will
deliver a speech on commercial, practical and sociological aspects of Free
Software and the GNU Project.

LinuxForum 2005 will be held in Copenhagen during the
weekend between the 4th and 5th of March. FSF Europe
will be represented by Henrik Sandklef, together with
the Danish organisation IT-Politisk Forening that is
working for information freedom in Denmark.

Between the 2nd and 4th of March, Karin Kosina and Jonas Öberg
will give talks at the Free and Open Source Software Workshop in
Damascus. Karin will talk about the economic aspects of Free
Software and Jonas will talk about formal education on Free
Software on a university level.

of FOSDEM will take place in Brussels. The FSF Europe will
be represented by several members and volunteers, and will
also sell t-shirts and other merchandise.

FSFE is planning to participate in the Preparatory Committee (2. PrepCom)
meeting of the second phase of the World Summit on the Information
Society (WSIS). Georg Greve intends to be in Geneva, Switzerland from 17.

On Friday, 18th February, Georg Greve will give a talk at LOTS at
the University of Bern, Switzerland. In his lecture, he will
talk about the origins and the advantages of Free Software.

FSFE is going to participate in the World Social Forum from 26th to
31st January 2005 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. On 26th January, Georg
Greve will participate at an event with the topic "Digital
Revolution: Knowledge Sharing x Impresionment on Information
Society". The event will take place in Room A105 from 15:30 am to
18:30 am.
Free Software - challenges in the digital age, Dublin, Ireland

On Friday, Jan 14th 2005 at 19:30, Georg Greve will hold a talk
about the challenges of Free Software in the digital age and
about the work of the Free Software Foundation Europe. The talk
will be held in Theatre Q, Arts Block on the UCD campus on
January 14th and will be open to the public.

in Bolzano, Italy. Two members of the Free Software Foundation Europe
will give three different lectures: Werner Koch will speak about "Privacy
and encryption techniques", Alessandro Rubini will present "Free Software
in teaching" and gives an "Introduction to kernel programming".

conference organized entirely by the Free Software community in Brazil -- will
take place in the Anhembi
Convention Center, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Georg Greve will open the

"autonomy and freedom of knowledge in the information society. Political,
economical, and cultural consequences". The conference will start at 9:00
am and will end in the evening. The Event is designed for administrative
directors, department chiefs, directors of office from South Tyrol as well
as business people, interested organisations, and citizens. The event
is public with no admission fee, but registration is required
until Sep 30th on the events web site.

Free Software Summer Event in Caceres, Spain

On Monday, July 22 at 10:00 Georg Greve holds a speech about the
Free Software Foundation Europe. He also participates at round table
discussions on the topic "Must governments support Free Software?" on
Wednesday, July 21 from 12:30 to 13:30 and from 13:30 to 14:30 and on the
topic "Software Patents in Europe" on Thursday, July 22 at the same time.
The speeches will be delivered in English.

GNU/LinuxTag is one of the major Free Software events. Like every year,
the FSF Europe will man a booth. Several of our team members will be
there to answer questions about our activities, and we will sell
merchandise like t-shirts and pins for the benefit of our work for Free
Software. Bernhard Reiter and Georg Greve will hold talks about Free
Software and its licenses Wednesday, 16:00, Thursday, 14:00, and
Saturday, 13:00.

for copyright in Europe?" will be held. The list of speakers also
includes Georg Jakob, Member of the FSF Europe, who will talk about
winners and losers from the "Intellectual Proprerty Rights Enforcement

South America, visiting the local Free Software community in
Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil to support them in their struggle for

EuroPython: Free Software in the Public Interest
