The ZOOOM Initiative
The FSFE is part of the ZOOOM Initiative, a project financed by the European Commission to raise awareness of the importance of management of rights and obligations related to Free Software, Open Data, and Open Hardware, in ecosystems of constant innovation.
The initiative has the primary goal of raising awareness among a diversified audience of academia, business, industry, and innovation supporting organisations about the generation and management of assets involving:
- Free Software
- Open Data
- Open Hardware
More specifically, the ZOOOM Initiative will develop a series of reports, white papers, training materials, and web portals to promote a solid understanding of licensing requirements and business needs aiming to reach the three key groups of actors in innovation ecosystems: namely knowledge generators, innovation support organizations, and key stakeholders.
Among the several tasks that the FSFE is responsible for is the promotion of the REUSE specification for copyright and licensing information. REUSE serves as a set of best practices for software projects searching for an easy-to-implement manner to convey legal information in a manner that is both human and machine readable.
The project is comprised of a consortium of 10 organizations and managed by the Hub Innovazione Trentino. The funding has a time frame of two years, beginning in 2022.
