27 – 30 December 2014
From December 27 to 30, FSFE will be present with a so-called “assembly” at the 31st Chaos Communication Congress. It will be a place to get to know FSFE and our mission as well as a place for every Fellow and friend of Free Software to meet, greet, connect or hack. There will be talks and workshops every day around 2pm, for example about GnuPG encryption with the Fellowship smart card / Android security and privacy with Free Software. Finally we bring a Free Software Free Scultpure - Artwork by Kai Mertens. Pass by and join our community.

The German Federal Environmental Agency and the Öko-Institut present an expert discussion about "Sustainable software" on November 28, 2014.
"Sustainable software" means software that helps to establish a sustainable IT-evolution by its own development, by its use and its shutting-down. Erik Albers will give a introductory speech about sustainability in and by Free Software. The event begins at 10am in the Öko-Institut, Schicklerstraße 5-7, 10179 Berlin. Registration required under veranstaltung-ps@oeko.de.

We will install beginner friendly GNU/Linux distributions as well as quick introductions to the most important programs to use GNU/Linux as your daily operating system. On 12th of November, Georg C. F. Greve, FSFE's founding president and
CEO of Kolab Systems AG will give a talk about Free Software and its
advantages in research and teaching in the University of Konstanz, room
V 1001. The talk starts at 18:30 and addresses students, teachers, and
IT authorities likewise. Admission is free, but please consider
pre-registering on the event website.

On November, 7 and 8, there will be a booth the FIfFKon2014, organised by the "Forum InformatikerInnen für Frieden und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung" in the Technische Universität Berlin. The topics are around the role of Germany and Germany's secret services in the latest past - from Echelon to Prism until Eikonal. FSFE will be present with a booth to inform the public about the importance of Free Software - not just for security issues.

On October 25 and 26, there will be a booth at T-Dose, organised by the T-Dose Foundation in the Fontys University of Applied Science in Eindhoven. T-DOSE is a free and yearly event held in The Netherlands to promote use and development of Open Source Software. During this event Open Source projects, developers and visitors can exchange ideas and knowledge. FSFE will be present with a booth to inform the public about the importance of Free Software.

Many friends of Free Software will come to the LinuxCon Europe in Duesseldorf. Because of that, an extraordinary fellowship meeting and brunch will take place in Schwesterherz in Bilk (Bilker Allee 66, 40219 Düsseldorf). It will start at 11:00 CEST. FSFE's Berlin group participates at BeLUG's Software Freedom Day event. Matthias Kirschner, Torsten Grote, and Nermin Canik from Istanbul will be there to talk with you about Free Software. Furthermore the FSFE website pool needs some overhaul, bug squishing, style cleaning and so on. Therefore we use SFD to meet for a FSFE website Hackathon on Saturday, 20 September 2014 from 2pm until open end at BeLUG, Lehrter Straße 53, Berlin. For everyone not in Berlin the meeting will take place on IRC. Join us in #fsfe on chat.freenode.net.
The hackathon will take place in parellel to the Software Freedom Day party of the Berlin Linux User Group (BeLUG). Come celebrate SFD with us while helping us maintain our pool of campaign sites.

On September 4th and 5th, parallel to the IGF2014, there will be held the Internet Ungovernance Forum (IUF) in Istanbul. FSFE officially supports IUF as a bottom-up conference, that likes to "reclaim the Internet as a fundamental infrastructure of our societies". FSFE will help to spread knowledge about the use and importance of Free Software and Open Standards for a Free Society. If you like to meet us, come to our booth.

As every year, FSFE will attend FrOSCon with a booth. Our education team
will participate in the Froglabs
program for kids, and on Saturday 11:15 our vice president,
Matthias Kirschner, will give a talk about "An endangered
species: the computer as a universal machine" (in German). The
event takes place at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Science,
Grantham-Allee 20, 53757 Sankt Augustin. Normal tickets are 5€ for both
days, and can be bought onsite or soon in our presale (there is also the
option for business tickets to support the event).

The Slovenian Fellowship meeting, which Karsten and Matija will participate in, will take place on July 9th, starting at 17:00 in Cyberpipe, Gosposvetska 2, SI-1000 Ljubljana.

On July 7th at 11:40 during the RMLL/LSM 2014, Erik Albers will
give a speech about freedom on android devices, take back control over your data, and synchronizing them using free software. The talk is held in English, and will be held in Amphi 31 at University of Montpellier II.

On Saturday 14 June at 18:00 there will be a social event in the
Linuxhotel in Essen. During the weekend the German speaking teams of FSFE
will have an internal coordination meeting. On Saturday we invite all
Fellows and Free Software activists to meet us at the Linuxhotel, discuss
Free Software issues with us, and hopefully enjoy the good weather with a
BBQ. Please let us know if you plan to come and if you can also bring some
snacks, so we can keep that in mind when we buy food.

Free speech is a human right, and a cornerstone of any democratic
society. To enable communication, it is important that documents can
be opened and read by the people who are meant to receive them. In
today's world, it is equally important that we have the ability to
ensure that documents are read only by the people meant to receive
them, to prevent a scenario where both censorship and self-censorship
degrade the ability of citizens to speak freely to each other, develop
new ideas, and drive the progress of our society.
For the fourth time, FSFE and the Greens/EFA group in the European
Parliament will celebrate Document Freedom Day together. The event,
which includes a presentation of the DebianParl project, will run from
13:30 to 16:00. Attendance is free of charge. Pre-registration is
required in order to enter the Parliament.

"Linux-Infotag Augsburg". The event takes place on 23 March 2014 from 9:30 to
17:30 in the IT faculty of the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences,
Germany. Admission is free.

Together with Stefano Zacchiroli (Debian) and Simon Phipps (Open Source
Initiative, MariaDB Foundation), FSFE's Vice President Matthias Kirschner
will discuss the challenges of Free Software. The panel discussion is
from 17:00 until 18:00. The conference is organised by the European
Pirates and MEP Amelia Andersdotter and takes place in the European
Parliament and is free of charge.

On March 16th at 10:00 during the Chemnitzer Linux-Tage, Matthias Kirschner will
give a speech at the Technical University Chemnitz about computers as general
purpose machines and the dangers of limiting the rights of their owners. The
talk, in German, will be held in the central lecture buildung, room V1 at
Reichenhainer Straße 90, Chemnitz.
15 – 16 March 2014
On March 15th and 16th, there will be a FSFE booth during the Chemnitzer Linux-Tage, an event dedicated to everything about GNU/Linux and Free Software. Just pass by the booth to get to know people from the FSFE as well as other Fellows. The booth will also come with brand new merchandise and promotion material.

Some people argue that you have to protect innovations. FSFE's Vice
President Matthias Kirschner attends a panel discussion organised by
the European Patent Office which discusses several ways how to
approach this aim. The topics range between copyright methods,
software patents, and their implications for Free Software. The event
takes place in hall 8 from 16:30 until 17:15 and is in English.

In a panel discussion together with representatives from Red Hat GmbH,
DTAG, synetics GmbH and HMW Consulting Ltd., FSFE's Vice President
Matthias will discuss several edge cases of Free Software. The main
question to answer during the discussion will be whether Free Software
differentiates from proprietary software in every case. The event takes
place at CeBIT from 14:30 until 16:00 in hall 6, block H01 and will be in
German.
First meet-up of the new Fellowshipgroup in Zürich, Switzerland

On Thursday, March 6th, at 6pm there will be a first meet-up of the Zürich Fellowshipgroup since renewing. Invited are all supporters of Free Software as well as other interested persons. As this is the first meet-up, we will mainly discuss about self organisation and further activities. The meeting will be in Stampfenbachstrasse 69, E-Stock, ID-Lounge (ETH Zürich). Who will not be able to make it in time, is of course invited to join later.

Futurezone technology news is hosting the
the first 3D-printing-conference in Austria. They invited Peter Bubestinger to
represent the FSFE at a panel discussion about "legal grayzones" regarding this
upcoming rechnology.
The event is called print3Dfuture and
takes place at the Odeon Theatre.

On February 22, 2014 the FSFE Bari Fellowship Group will participate to the Bari local Open Data Day event organized under the International Open Data Hackathon umbrella.
The Open Data Day is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption open data policies by the world's local, regional and national governments.
The Bari Fellows will talk about OpenStreetMap and lead a OSM mapping mini-party in the area of the meeting.

The local group of FSFE Manchester is running a week-long "I love Free Software" Festival, beginning from February 3rd until February 8. While the whole festival is about Free Software, each evening focusses on a specific topic: Bitcoin, Wordpress, Cryptoparty and Free Your Android. The events take place in the Madlab, Manchester. Participation is free of charge and it is a great possibility to meet friends and other likeminded people.

This year, FOSDEM will be held on the 1st and 2nd of February 2014 in Brussels. FSFE will at least participate with a booth and there will be many fellows, coordinators and staffers.
As like every year, we're looking forward to many meetings and discussions and also to a very good time for all.

On January 27 will be the first Cologne Fellowship meeting since the newly arranged coordination. Meeting point will be the C4 (Chaos Computer Club Köln), meeting time will be 7pm. Drinks, Projector and Internet will be available. The C4 is happy about donations as a thank you for using their location.
Topics will be planning and strategy of further Fellowship meetings, lobby activities in Cologne, computer courses and networking with other active and likeminded groups in Cologne, for example associations of the Cryptoparty movement, AK-Vorrat of Freifunker.

The European Commission (EC) has opened up copyright policy across the European Union for public comment. While the consultation attempts to cover all areas of user's and creators' experiences, some questions are specifically relevant for Free Software advocates.
At this meeting, we will have a look at the questions we find interesting, discuss them together and submit answers in our own name. We will meet at 19:00, FSFE Berlin office.

This month, the Vienna Fellowship meeting will be in
the Metalab, located in the
Rathausstraße 6 in the 1st district of Vienna. We'll be
there from 18:00, with agenda related discussions starting
at 19:00. As usual, this invitation is for everyone interested
in the FSFE or Free Software. We're looking forward to seeing

Berlin Fellowship Meeting with the topic "Alternatives to Google search" in Berlin, Germany

On January 9, there will be the next Berlin Fellowshipmeeting, as usual in the e-lok (near Ostkreuz). Luca will report about the Mobilize!-conference "Whatever happened to pivacy?" that happened in December and was organized by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung. Next, Kai would like to discuss our main topic for this meeting: "Alternatives to Google search". Finally, we would like to plan an event for the Document Freedom Day, End of March, to run a joint activity.
As usual, the Fellowship meeting is a good possibility to meet other Fellows as well as other Free Software enthusiasts. You can get good food and best drinks at e-lok for a reasonable price and good mood for no cost. Official start is at 19:30.
