Device Neutrality: Digital Sovereingty over Devices in Aveiro, Portugal

28 September – 01 October 2023

Although digital devices are ubiquitous today, the number of devices on which users cannot run Free Software is exponentially increasing. The consequence is an increased loss of control over users' technology. Device Neutrality aims to enable end-users to bypass gatekeepers to have a non-discriminatory use of Free Software on their devices.

The Next Generation Internet and Free Software in Aveiro, Portugal

What will the Internet of the future look like? The Next Generation Internet Initiative (NGI) envisions an Internet that is accessible and diverse, and respects the fundamental value of privacy. Here at the FSFE, we believe that Free Software is key to accomplish this vision, so that all people, regardless of their background, are able to use the Internet as an effective tool to achieve their full potential. This talk will go over the NGI initiative and will present the funding opportunities for Free Software projects engaged in changing the landscape of the Internet of the future.

Router Freedom: The hardware component of Net Neutrality in Aveiro, Portugal

16 – 17 September 2023

Net neutrality refers to non-discrimination of internet communication. ISPs should treat all internet communications equally, offering users and online content providers consistent rates irrespective of content, website, platform, application, type of equipment, source address, destination address, or method of communication. But what happens when they discriminate the type of routers and modems consumers use for internet connection? This talk explains why Router Freedom is key for achieving Net Neutrality, presenting the main finding of a recent survey the FSFE has conducted in the EU.

Join the first reading of Ada & Zangemann in Italian! Celebrate with us on September 16th Software Freedom Day listening to the story of Ada while eating homemade ice cream.

The FSFE is celebrating Software Freedom Day with the Italian Free Software community, together with the Bergamo Linux User Group. On September 16th, we will be celebrating this occasion with the first Italian reading of the book ‘Ada & Zangemann – A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and raspberry ice cream’. A reading for everyone, young and old! Moreover, there will be a workshop afterward for the little ones and free homemade ice cream, courtesy of an FSFE volunteer.

Software Freedom Day in Berlin, Germany

16 September 2023

The local group of the FSFE, Haecksen Berlin and the Linux user group Linux Works are organizing a celebration for the Software Freedom Day in Berlin (Germany) at the Kieztreff Undine on Saturday, September 16th. The program will begin at 15h and includes talks about Free Software and workshops about the Fediverse and digital self-defense on Android phones.

You can find the Kieztreff Undine in the Hagenstraße 57 directly at the underground station Lichtenberg. The entry is barrier free.

The event will be in German, but organizers and speaker can communicate in English as well. 

NGI: Building the internet of the future with Free Software in Novi Sad, Serbia

Device Neutrality or how to safeguard Free Software in devices in Novi Sad, Serbia

While our devices are increasingly becoming proprietary, we need to find ways to safeguard ways to Free Software, otherwise our digital autonomy can be highly compromised. This talk introduces "Device Neutrality" as a principle to ensure that users equal access and non-discriminatory use of Free Software in of their devices. The audience will learn about real-life examples, as the struggle for Router Freedom and the latest regulatory initiatives for internet devices in the EU.

Chaos Communication Camp 2023

After four years of waiting and many online conferences – probably too many –, the Chaos Communication Camp is finally back! Come and camp with us in the 'Bits & Bäume' village from 15th to 19th August 2023. The Free Software Foundation Europe is part of this year's 'Bits & Bäume' village.

Together with many different groups, the FSFE is organising the 'Bits & Bäume' village. This is a space for all CCCamp participants to come together, talk about Free Software and sustainability, connect with others, or simply visit the FSFE booth. The 'Bits & Bäume' village is not just a meeting place but also a space for input sessions and listening to new ideas, as it is involved in organising one of the five central stages.

Free software gives everyone the right to use, understand, distribute and improve programmes for any purpose. These freedoms strengthen other fundamental rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press and the right to privacy.

At the Free Software Evening at Kieztreff Undine (Hagenstr. 57, 10365 Berlin (barrier-free access) directly at S/U station Lichtenberg), the Berlin group of the Free Software Foundation Europe wants to introduce itself and the work of FSFE, meet new people and network over a nice evening.

EU: Proposed liability rules will harm Free Software talk in Málaga, Spain in Málaga, Spain

The EU is currently debating the introduction of liability rules for software, including Free Software. The main debate happens around the Cyber Resilience Act. Alexander Sander will present the current state of this debate and show activities that everyone can do to safeguard Free Software in this debate.

Legal and Management Challenges for Open Innovation in the Digital Society in Trieste, Italy

Gabriel Ku Wei Bin and Lucas Lasota, both FSFE's project managers in legal area will present two talks at the Management International Conference in Trieste, Italy regarding the Next Generation Internet initiative and Device Neutrality. The talks will highlight the work FSFE has done in shaping the internet of the future and how its device-oriented activities are crucial for regulation of large internet corporations. Both talks are sponsored by the European Union's "Next Generation Internet" and "ZOOOM" initiatives.

Keynote on the EU Policy topics the whole Free Software community should know about in Zagreb, Croatia

The FSFE Berlin local group has organized a presentation about The Fediverse as an alternative to existing social media platforms. It will take place in the Cafe Wostok (Weitlingstraße 97, next to Lichtenberg station in Berlin). Tobias from the local group is part of the Friendica development community and will give an introductory lecure, no prior knowledge about the Fediverse is expected. Talk on Free Software and Permaculture in Mors, Denmark

On February 23d at midday, four volunteers from the FSFE Local Group in Aarhus will give a talk about Free Software and permaculture.

The talk will be at Højskolen Mors, a non-vocational school for young people in the island of Mors, Northern Jutland, and we have been invited by the school's permaculture course. We will talk about sustainability, freedom, independence from tech giants, fairness and upcycling, with reference to the Upcycling Android Campaign.

The local group of the FSFE in Berlin is meeting for the Educational evening. This time not online but in the youth club E-LOK (Laskerstraße 6-8 near Ostkreuz station). This time we are happy that Susanne will present her talk from the Chemnitzer Linux Days about IPv6. The talk is in German and has the title Eine kleine Einführung in IPv6 mit Linux (A short introduction to IPv6 on Linux).

MiniDebConfs are local meetings organized by Debian project members to achieve similar objectives to those of the DebConf, but on a regional context. In this first MiniDebConf in Portugal, we'll not only be focused on Debian, but in the Free Software communities in general. As this year's "I Love Free Software Day" coincides within the dates of the MiniDebConf, we'll have a moment dedicated to show our love to Free Software on the 14th.

Marcos Marado is a member of ANSOL, the Portuguese sister organization to FSFE, and in this 30 minutes presentation he plans to tell you a little bit of what is ANSOL, how has it been celebrating this date each year, and how can you, too, show your appreciation for Free Software on this day. With Upcycling Android, the Free Software Foundation Europe shows how phones can benefit from an extended lifespan by flashing them with a Free Software operating systems. We will bring sample phones where Free Software operating systems can be tried out and also be flashed by the participants themselves. In the meantime there is room for questions and answers about flashing phones and also an introduction into a world full of Free Software by the means of F-Droid and microG.

The workshop takes place on 20.01.2023 from 16:00 - 20:00 hours in the Clubraum of the Alte Feuerwache Köln, Melchiorstraße 3, 50670 Cologne. Upcycling Android Train-the-Trainers workshop (online)

With Upcycling Android, the Free Software Foundation Europe shows how Android devices can benefit from an extended lifespan by flashing them with a Free Software operating systems. This workshop is about sharing our knowledge and experience with people who are interested in organizing workshops on flashing Free Software operating systems themselves. Among other things, we will talk about the background of the campaign, what to consider when organizing a workshop and how we can help in promoting and implementing a workshop. Afterwards, there will be a talk on F-Droid by its lead maintainer Hans-Christoph Steiner and a talk on microG by its main developer Marvin Wißfeld.

We are discussing how to make large amounts of data (JSONs) searchable in a browser and how to integrate Free Software Text-To-Speech into a blog. The question of coding without a 'real' computer reveals a short look at Android IDEs for mobile app development. Are Kilux and Chemnitzer Linux Tage might be good opportunities to meet besides FrOScon? Free music instruments are also of interest to us, this time featuring an opentheremin. Artificial intelligence has many applications in various fields such as finance, health, justice or law enforcement and thus can have a significant impact on our lives. Therefore, it must be fair and without discrimination. Vincent Lequertier gives a talk 'For an inclusive and ethical artificial intelligence'. This presentation will give tools to understand the notion of inclusiveness and ethics of artificial intelligence, through Free Software software and technology.

The presentation is part of the event Campus du Libre (Free Software campus), and the FSFE will be there with a booth. Campus du Libre will take place on Saturday 26 November 2022 from 9:30 am to 6 pm on the Doua campus, in the Hedy Lamarr building (formerly Claude Chappe). Every year, 1.5 billion smartphones are manufactured worldwide - and just as many are thrown away after a short period of use when the updates expire. Together with the FSFE, the Chaos Computer Club Frankfurt invites you to an Upcycling Android workshop. It takes place at 6 pm, at the Hackquarter of the CCC-FFM, Häuser Gasse 2, 60487 Frankfurt am Main.

After a short talk, we will show you how to update a smartphone with Free Software. There will be test devices to try out the whole thing yourself without any danger. GHCon2022 - REUSE talk and compliance award in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain

The GNU Health Conference (GHCon) is an annual conference that brings together enthusiasts and developers of the Libre Health & Hospital Information System.

On Thursday 17 November at 17:00, Lina Ceballos - REUSE's coordinator will join this year's edition of GHCon which will take place in person in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. Lina will give a talk in English about REUSE and show the participants how indicating licensing and copyright information can be easier. Upcycling Android workshop at the SFSCon in Bolzano, Italy

Many Android users are suffering from not receiving any updates to their default operating system any more. But there is not need yet to toss your device away! The problem can be solved by installing a Free Software operating system called “custom ROM” on your device. We gather to talk about the issues arising from software obsolescence in the Android world and help each other in flashing devices. You can bring your own but we will also bring some devices to tinker around so you can gather experience with flashing your phone. We focus on installing CalyxOS but we are open for your input.

There will be a short introduction talk on the relationship between hardware and software lifespans, followed by a flashing session of a sample phones. At the end and during the workshop we will answer questions about flashing and there will be the possibility to explore sample phones. The workshop takes place in the context of the SFSCon, on Saturday 12.11.22 from 09:00 - 12:00 hours in the NOI Techpark in Bolzano, Italy.

Upcycling Android workshop in Hamburg, Germany

With Upcycling Android, the Free Software Foundation Europe shows how phones can benefit from an extended lifespan by flashing them with a Free Software operating systems. There will be a short presentation on the relationship between hardware and software lifespans, followed by a joint flashing session of sample phones. In the meantime there is room for questions and answers about flashing phones and also an introduction into a world full of Free Software by the means of F-Droid and microG.

The workshop takes place on 2.11.22 from 16:00 - 20:00 hours in the CSTI of the HAW, Steindamm 94, 20099 Hamburg. If you want to flash a phone yourself, please bring your own laptop. Places are limited, please register at upcycling@fsfe.org 

FSFE General Assembly in Arnhem, Netherlands

The members of the FSFE e.V. (see here for a full list) is the organisation's highest organ and take decisions about (primarily) budgets and the election of the President, Vice President and Financial Officer (see our constitution). Decisions of special importance to the organisation can sometimes be taken by the members as well. The group meets once a year in a different place in Europe where there are members for a strategic weekend in which the long term strategy for Free Software is discussed, and where the formal annual assembly is held. The minutes of the general assembly meetings are public.  

Upcycling Android Workshop at FifFKon in Berlin, Germany

Every year, 1.5 billion smartphones are manufactured worldwide and thrown away after often a too short lifespan. If we continue to use our current phone instead of buying a new one, we help to avoid the increase of electronic waste. And if only every third person would use their phone 1 year longer we could save the raw materials for the production of 100's of millions of phones per year.

This workshop brings together tech enthusiasts and sustainability enthusiasts to learn how to make phones last longer by flashing them with Free Software operating systems. There will be a short introduction talk on the relationship between hardware and software lifespans, followed by a flashing session of a sample phone. At the end and during the workshop we will answer questions about flashing and there will be the possibility to explore sample phones. The workshop takes place in the context of the FifFKon, on Saturday 22.10.22 from 15:00 - 16:00 hours in the Archenhold-Sternenwarte in Berlin.

'Artificial Intelligence and Free Software in the European Union' talk in Lisbon, Portugal

The European Union has set itself the goal of adopting digital policies that are aligned with people’s rights, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not any exception. Free Software plays an important role in the development and further success of such technologies. Hence, Alexander wants to point out to specific demands that must be considered to be aligned with Europe’s ambition of building and deploying technologies that empower people while strengthening Europe’s economy.

A well thought-out development and use of AI focusing on the benefits of Free Software will foster innovation, boost the economy, enhance control, strengthen trust, and it will make Europe fit for the digital age. In this talk, Alexander Sander will shed light at the latest developments in AI in the EU and the role Free Software plays in this. The talk is part of the Open Source Lisbon conference.

May REUSE be with you! in Barcelona, Spain

REUSE does not "reinvent the wheel". On the contrary, it integrates seamlessly into development processes and other best practices when indicating Free Software licences. In addition, there are tools and documentation to help you get started. During this talk Lina will take a closer look at these tools and documentation, with the bonus of seeing a live demonstration of how to make a project compliant with the REUSE specifications.

FSFE co-organises Bits & Bäume in Berlin, Germany

The FSFE is co-organising the Bits & Bäume ("Bits and Trees") conference together with 11 other civil society organisations. The Bits & Bäume is a conference about digital sustainability. Besides organising, we provide content with three talks, one workshop, and a booth. Lucas Lasota speaks about "Device Neutrality: a sustainable way to safeguard control over digital devices", Erik Albers about "4 Demands towards a sustainable European ecodesign", we have a workshop on Upcycling Android and Matthias Kirschner gives a book reading of Ada & Zangemann.

The FSFE local group Berlin supports our acitivities with an information booth at the BuB conference. So drop by to discuss software freedom and sustainability! The standard ticket costs 29 EUR and the tickets are limited. The conference starts on Friday 30 September at 18:00, ends on Sunday 2 October at 18:00, and takes place at TU Berlin, Straße des 17. REUSE: Displaying copyright and licence information easily! at Akademy-es in Barcelona, Spain

With three simple steps, it makes adding and reading licensing and copyright information easy for both humans and machines. In this presentation, Lina Ceballos will guide us through the principles of REUSE and show us how to make licensing clear and simple.

FSFE booth and Upcycling Android session at NLLGG in Utrecht, Netherlands

Every time we keep using our current phone instead of buying a new one we help avoid the production of new phones and the increase of e-waste. "Upcyling Android" is an initiative to overcome software obsolescence and to extend the lifespan of our hardware with the help of Free Software. Upcycling our devices this way is an important step to rethink our short-term, linear consumption of electronic devices in favor of a circular economy.

On Saturday 21st of May 2022 we will host a FSFE-booth from 11:00 until 16:00 hour at the NLLGG meeting in Utrecht. As part of FSFE's 'Android Upgrade' campaign there will be a session at 12:00. In it Nico Rikken will show you the possibilities of installing a custom ROM with free software on your smartphone. After a talk that gives an overview there will be time to exchange experiences and see what steps are needed to make your Android device more free. The location is Gerrit Rietveld College, Eykmanlaan 1200, 3571 KH Utrecht. We look forward to have a chat with you about Free Software!

'Modernising Public Infrastructure with Free Software' presentation in Caltanissetta, Italy

We want legislation requiring that publicly financed software developed for the public sector be made publicly available under a Free and Open Source Software licence. If it is public money, it should be public code as well.

Francesco Bonnano, Software developer and FSFE volunteer from the local group Sicily; and Professor Michele Calà will present the 'Public Money? FSFE information stall on Veganmania Donauinsel in Vienna, Austria

26 – 28 August 2022

Every year there are Veganmania summer festivals in Vienna. It is already a tradition that the local FSFE team takes part with an information stall. It usually is very well visited and reaches many people who aren't yet aware of free software and the ethical considerations that come with it. The Veganmania has been proven to be the best event by far in Vienna to inform many new people about software ethics because it is visited by people already used to think outside the box.

The event takes place from 26th to 28th at "Leuchtturmwiese" on the "Donauinsel" in Vienna. Thousands of people usually come there to enjoy good food, sustainable products, interesting information stalls ... and of course the summer. There is no entry fee and people are invited to come at any time from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. Please drop by in case you want to talk about free software with us! The German Ministry of Environment opens its doors to citizens this weekend, organising talks, music shows, and workshops. Also it gives space to many organisations, and the FSFE will be present with an information booth. Free Software does not only help the users, but also the environment.

The FSFE's Translators team is mainly responsible for translating information about Free Software on the FSFE's webpage into other languages. The FSFE's Translators team has been helping to make information about Free Software available to everyone by translating them to more languages and thereby reducing language barriers.

At our second meeting we are happy to welcome new team members, learn about the webpreview tool and FSFE's git-instance and also play some fun games together. The meeting will take place on the 8th of August and begin at 7 o'clock till 9 o'clock (CEST). "Modernising Public Infrastructure with Free Software" talk in Erfurt, Germany

On Monday 4 July, Matthias Kirschner, president of the FSFE, will give a talk at the 2nd eGovernment Congress Thüringen, which takes place in Erfurt, Germany. Matthias will talk from 10:15 to 11:15 CEST about the FSFE's Public Money? Public Code! framework, the importance of technical knowledge within the public administration, and the technical distribution of power. The event takes place at the Kongressbereich im Steigerwaldstadion (Arena), Mozartallee 3, 99096 Erfurt. Public Money? Public Code! workshop in Vigo, Spain

The Public Money? Public Code! campaign has been supported by over 29.000 people and nearly 200 NGOs. Already five public entities, the Swedish JobTech Development, the German “Samtgemeinde Elbmarsch”, the Spanish parliament from Asturias “Junta General del Principado de Asturias”, the Spanish city of Benigànim, and the Spanish city of Barcelona have signed our open letter. We would like to have more administrative units supporting our cause. But to achieve this we need your help. In this workshop that will take place on Saturday 25th of June at 12:30 CEST at esLibre 2022 in Vigo - Spain, Lina Ceballos and Alexander Sander will explain how we convince local administrations or other institutions, decision-makers, and parties to use more Free Software in the future. "What role did Free Software play during the corona crisis?" talk in Vigo, Spanien

Alexander Sander, FSFE Policy Consultant will give a talk on "What role did Free Software play during the corona crisis?" The Corona crisis has made it clear to us which developments in digitisation we have missed in recent years. At the same time, there are also positive examples. Free software has become more and more of a topic and more and more administrations have understood the advantages it brings.

Alexander will take a look at the developments of the past years and give an outlook on how we can better face future crises through the use of Free Software and what role governments, public bodies and administrations and the principle of “Public Money? With three simple steps, it makes adding and reading licensing and copyright information easy for both humans and machines. 'What Free Software and Free Seeds have in common' talk in Berlin, Germany

At first glance, software and seeds seem to have little in common. The former has only been part of the reality of our lives for a few decades, while seeds could almost be considered an anthropological constant and are inextricably linked to human history. This lecture is dedicated to the latest cultural phenomena of Free Software and Free Seeds and highlights commonalities between the two spheres.

Gabriel will speak on how Free Software works as an important framework that supports our human rights in a digital world. The talk will be held at Linnégatan 21 on Wed 22 June at 18:00. This month the CMS Garden joins the FSFE Women group meeting. The CMS Garden e. V. is a friendly association of the communities of 11 FOSS content management systems. Together they appear at fairs and conferences to join forces instead of competing with each other. Lucas Lasota, FSFE Legal Project Manager will give a talk on REUSE at the Weizenbaum Conference in Berlin. The conference will bring together scholars, artists, activists, and human rights advocates to debate the diverse facets of the term "digital sovereignty". The talk will explain how REUSE helps everyone with copyright and Free Software license compliance. It is part of the panel 'Socio-technical developments and practices of empowerment' which takes place at 15:30-18:00. The event is in English and German. 'Artificial Intelligence and Free Software in the European Union' talk (online)

The EU is on its way to adopting legislation on artificial intelligence. Transparency plays a major role in this. But how exactly should this transparency be designed and what role does Free Software play? Alexander Sander will give an insight into the current state of the debate and what chances there are that provisions for Free Software will be included in the legislation. They will demonstrate examples and good practices currently in place, and possible solutions for a modernisation of the public infrastructure with Free Software. The event will also present and distribute the Italian translation of the 'Denaro pubblico? Codice pubblico!' brochure, which was just published.

'Public Money? Public Code' presentation in Trento, Italy

FSFE volunteers from Italian local groups will present the international campaign 'Public Money? Public Code!' in Trento. Upcycling Android workshop in Cologne, Germany

Together with contributors from PostmarketOS, we are offering another Upcycling Android workshop on 03 June at Alte Feuerwehrwache in Cologne, Germany. The workshop is about bringing tech enthusiasts and sustainability enthusiasts together and exchanging views on technology and sustainability while flashing phones with Free Software operating systems. We want to provide a place for all questions you have and we will bring different phones for trying out different systems and for trying out how to flash them. You can also bring your own phones, but in that case, we would ask you to clarify with us in advance whether we can support those devices. In addition to the actual phone flashing, there will be a short keynote speech on longevity and sustainability on Android and other devices.

As a unique feature for this workshop, we have two rooms available. One room will focus on installing systems on phones to make them more sustainable. In the other room, the focus is on exchanging ideas about the development of the GNU/Linux mobile operating system PostmarketOS and about learning how to get involved.

The workshop takes place from 16:00 - 20:00 at Alte Feuerwache Köln, Melchiorstraße 3, 50670 Köln. Everyone is welcome to join, participation is free, but please register via email to floriansnow@fsfe.org because space is limited.

Together with the local FSFE group Berlin we are organizing our first Upcycling Android workshop on March 19th, 2022 in Berlin. This workshop is primarily about bringing tech enthusiasts and sustainability enthusiasts together and exchanging views on technology and sustainability while flashing phones with Free Software operating systems. We want to give a place for all questions you have and bring different phones to test different settings. We will bring devices with us on which you can try flashing phones or you can bring your own phones. In the case of the latter, we would ask you to clarify with us in advance whether the devices you have brought with you can be supported.

In addition to the actual phone flashing, there will also be a short keynote speech on longevity and sustainability on Android and other devices. The event is in English and German. We are on site for 6 hours and look forward to a large number of people coming. The venue is the Holodeck of Netzpolitik.org at Schönhauser Allee 6/7, from 11:00 to 17:00. I Love FS Day: Gaming event (online)

Every 14th of February, people around the world celebrate the “I Love Free Software Day”. On this day we show our love for Free Software and thank all the people contributing to software freedom. This year, we are organising a whole event dedicated to Free Software games. The event takes place online on 14 February 2022 at 18:00-20:00 CET. For the first part of our event, our three expert guests in Free Software games, game engines, and Game Jams will share their experiences, and will immerse us in the world of Free Software games. The talks will also be streamed on stream.fsfe.org. After the talks, we invite you to play Veloren with us.

FSFE Netherlands online get-together (online)

26 January 2022

The next online group meeting of the FSFE Netherlands has been rescheduled to the 26th of January. The meeting will be from 20:00 until 21:00 CET on the conference server. It is usually quite 'gezellig' and so most stay until 22:30, but you can leave whenever you see fit. The meeting is open for everybody, and we'll switch to English if not everybody understands Dutch. More information can be found on the wiki. At the meetings we abide by the FSFE Code of Conduct. FSFE Women monthly meeting (online)

The meeting will take place on Thursday Jan 20th, 7.30pm CET. The FSFE Women meets once in a month to discuss topics related to Free Software, IT and about any aspects of being a woman* in tech. Please be aware that this group is women-centric and transgender and non-binary friendly. If you identify as a man, we kindly ask you to reach out to the coordinators of the FSFE Women to let them know you would like to join. For more information about the FSFE Women have a look at our team site. The group is open for all women* who are interested in Free Software. Registration is not required. The meeting is in English. 

Introduction to Software Law and FOSS Licenses (online)

10 January 2022

Dr. Lucas Lasota, who will give us some legal insight into the world of free software licences next Monday, 10 January 2022, 18.00 - 19.00 CET. The lecture, as well as the discussion afterwards, will take place in English and online via BigBlueButton.
