FSFE assembly at the Chaos Communication Conference 33C3

27 – 30 December 2016

From December 27 to 30, FSFE will host an assembly during the 33rd Chaos Communication Congress in that we offer a common space to discuss, meet, hack and organise. There will also be several self-organized sessions every day about various aspects of or around Free Software. More details are coming soon. Matthias Kirschner, the current FSFE President will be present, too.

25 – 27 November 2016

The FSFE will be present with a booth in FIfF-Konferenz 2016 – in.visible systems at the Mathematikgebäude TU Berlin (MA), Hörsaal HE101, Workshopraum MA141, from November 25th till the 27th. The Forum InformatikerInnen für Frieden organizes this conference which will cover topics related to hacking, science, politics and activism. The entrance to this event is for free so please join us! We will have some nice merchandise, stickers and promo material, so don't hesitate and come to say hi!!

Die OpenRheinRuhr ist eine Messe mit Kongress rund um das Thema "Freie Software" vom 5. bis 6. November im Rheinischen Industriemuseum in Oberhausen. Am Samstag, 5. 15 years FSFE - birthday party in c-base, Berlin, Germany

On Saturday, September 3rd, we invite for the FSFE birthday party to celebrate 15 years of existence in c-base - the famous hacker space in Berlin, Germany. Opening is directly after the end of Saturday's FSFE summit at 18:00 hours with a warm up and get together. At 20:00 there will be around one hour of program in that we shed light on FSFE's local heroes that keep us growing strong. Afterwards, we start the party with music and drinks - a nice time to revel in the past and look forward to the future.

Andrea Mayr-Stalder stellt ihr Projekt TurtleStitch vor, eine auf Freier Software basierende Plattform zum Erstellen von Stickmustern zur Ausgabe an Stickmaschinen. Wir werden erfahren, was Sticken und Programmieren gemeinsam haben, und den Prozess von der Erstellung der Vorlage bis hin zum tatsächlichen Sticken begleiten. Anschließend erläutert Andrea die Herausforderungen und Probleme in Bezug auf Freie Formate und Freie Software. Natürlich kommen auch eure Fragen nicht zu kurz.

Peter Bubestinger, FSFE Austrian coordinator gives a talk at the Open Source Conference Albania (OSCAL) about Free Software in schools. The conference's aim is to be a place where academia, businesses and Free Software hackers meet, make new friends. The keynote will be on Wednesday 11 May from 09:45 to 10:30. DORS/CLUC will take place in the premises of the Faculty at Unska 3 address.

Am Montag den 9.Mai um 19 Uhr ist wieder Fellowship Meetin in Bonn mit einem Vortrag von Guido Günther über "Wissenswertes über Erlang". Erlang ist eine sogenannte funktionale Programmiersprache die im Umfeld von Telefonanlagen entstanden ist. In diesem Bereich gelten extrem hohe Anforderungen an Stabilität, Ausfallsicherheit und Fehlertoleranz. Das Treffen ist wie immer offen für alle, die sich für Freie Software interessieren. Digital self-defence, playing soccer with MBots, Raspberry Music project are the main tracks of the Free Software Event at the Tilburg Library, along with informational stands and many DIY activities. Participants are the FSFE (Digi-Talk Maurice Verheesen), Ubuntu.NL, LibreOffice, NLLGG (Dutch Linux Users Group) and more. DIY activities involve the Raspberry TEdCase 3D-printing, 3D-Virtual Reality and more. Entrance is free. The Event starts at 12.00hrs and ends at 17.00hrs.

Organisiert durch Fellows der FSFE werden im Rahmen des Linux-Presentation-Day Wolf-Dieter Zimmermann und Wolfgang Romey allen Interessierten einen Einblick in das freie Betriebssystem Linux geben. Dazu gibt es mehrere "Trainings"-Rechner zum selber erleben. Die Veranstaltung findet statt von 10.00 bis 15.00 Uhr in der Volkshochschule in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

At this year's Linuxwochen Wien, FSFE will participate in a few ways. Franz Gratzer, designer for FSFE, will give a talk about the history of the FLOSS game "Trigger Rally" and a workshop of how to design and develop their own race tracks. Simon Hornbachner, local coordinator Linz, will be talking about Copyleft - what it actually means, some common misconceptions and why it isn't only beneficiary for "the community", but also for companies. There will also be a FSFE information booth and the local team is looking forward to everyone to meet!

Open Source Preservation Workshop in Stockholm, Sweden

Peter Bubestinger and Till Jaeger from FSFE and others will give insights on how memory institutions and cultural heritage organisations worldwide are increasingly empowered by Free Software licensed tools. This workshop is part of the PREFORMA project, in which 3 format conformance checkers have been developed to check and validate document-, image- and audiovisual files. Topics like format obsolescence, vendor lock-in or interoperability issues of proprietary implementations are being addressed in this workshop.

This is our monthly meetup held in the Athens Hackerspace. At this meetup we will discuss mostly around the two recent events that many community members attended. 32c3 at Hamburg and Fosdem at Brussels. We'll talk about new projects we learned about on these events, highlights and best presentations to watch.

Dieses Jahr finded die FOSDEM am 30. und 31. Januar in Brüssel statt. Wie jedes Jahr, wird die FSFE mit einem Info-Stand und vielen Aktivisten vertreten sein. Wir freuen uns auf viele Treffen und interessante Diskussionen.  

Monatliches Fellowship-Treffen in Wien, Österreich

Dieses Mal findet das Wiener Fellowship-Treffen wieder in der Bibliothek im Metalab, in der Rathausstraße 6 im 1. Bezirk in Wien statt. Wir treffen uns ab 18:00 Uhr - die Agenda starten wir um 19:00 Uhr. Wie immer richtet sich die Einladung an alle, die sich für die FSFE oder für Freie Software interessieren. It is well known that Android is an Open Source Operating System. But in practice, in order to use it a lot of non-free and locked down platforms are needed, like Google Play. F-Droid aims to fill this gap by offering a free platform that you can use to install and distribute your applications. The session will be provided by Daniel Martí, a lead F-Droid developer.
